Chinese Online Game "Glorious Mission Online" lets players fight Japanese military.

The Chinese army, People's Liberation Army, co-developed an online game that lets players fight the Japanese military over the disputed Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.

Chinese online game lets players fight Japan over disputed islands - CNN.com

-from the CNN article:

In "Glorious Mission Online," China's first online game co-developed by the People's Liberation Army and released to the public, players join the ranks of the country's military to take on the enemy.

The firm Giant Interactive Group, Inc. co-developed the game with the Nanjing Military Area Command of the PLA.

Game developer Gu Kai says the game targets nationalistic youths in hopes of recruiting them

The game was originally developed by China's military as a training and recruitment tool and featured Chinese forces taking on American soldiers.
But the game drew massive nationwide attention because of one level, which pits Chinese soldiers against a different enemy -- Japan.

This level is set on an island chain disputed between China and Japan. The game asks players to defend the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea, known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan.

we already know the Chinese uses CS as training...and I'm sure they have the resources to mass-license ArmA games...but of course they'd just rather make a knock-off version

The fact that the game developer created an online game that allows a player to fight the Japanese army over a real territory dispute over the Diaoyu islands is the interesting part about the game.

For people who do not know anything about the disputed islands, here's a summary about the history of the island dispute

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senkaku_Islands
The People's Republic and Taiwan claim that the islands have been a part of Chinese territory since at least 1534. They acknowledge that Japan took control of the islands in 1894–1895 during the first Sino-Japanese War, through the signature of the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

Interesting, didn't know there was oil beneath these islands, making it a hot topic. Otherwise why would China even care?

it's funny because the Americans make a game where you assault Oman or Shanghai...I dont see anyone up in arms about that...yes one's a training/recruitment tool and the other is more of enterainment for the masses...or so they want you to think

Spoiler!

China cares because of the same reason why it wants Taiwan...strategic point. Having a foothold in the East China Sea/Taiwan Strait is necessary to control the only feasible oil tanker route/shipping lane in the region

Japan's also involved in a dispute with Korea over an island called Dokdo..

The funny part is that a Korean couple live on the island with Korean police guards. No Japanese live there.

Well because Battlefield was not made by the state and not endorsed by the government, and also DICE is a swedish developer, no American.

America's Army featured middle eastern theatres, and you don't see CNN reporting about it.

tbh, this is just making a mountain of a mole hill.

It's funny how western society make this seem like a odd behavior yet they are doing it themselves. I don't even see this as news at all.
