I've been told more than 3 times that the price declared does not include shipping. That part isn't taxed on. Others I believe in this thread as well have also said this.

Some savings right there!

They ask "value of goods returning".

That definitely does not include labour costs, US taxes, or shipping. Not sure why that agent told you amount paid.

With the exchange rate now a days. Do you declare your value in the USD amount? or converted back to CAD?

if you go down with groceries and produce the receipt, it will be in USD. but if you order something online and pick it up, the "invoice" you will print at home before you go will most likely be in CAD. i always clarify when i talk to the border guard. when they ask the value of the goods and i went to somewhere like costco, i'll just say "about $105 US" that way both people are on the same page

given i am returning from the US, and have receipts in USD for US acquired goods, I merely say the USD amount. I do not deem this to be dishonest or misleading, I think given the situation it is entirely reasonable to not have to recalculate into CAD.

If they want they can always clarify by asking whether this is USD or CAD. They could not say you are trying to be misleading - the onus is on them in this situation.

I should note that I always have all receipts in hand ready to hand over - so if they tried to say i was being misleading, they'd be really stretching it as the proof is there for them to review.

Got shafted

It's actually kind of annoying how sometimes different agents will tell you different things.

Oh well

Definitely conflicting reports here.

An older border agent told me that the "value" is determined by what it cost to acquire the goods, which includes shipping, US tax, etc.

shipping is questionable, but taxes are most definitely taxed on.

landed cost, in general terms (i.e. not defined by CBSA), means all costs to you in your hand, shipping, taxes, duties, etc.

for a quick point bob run, i would never include shipping when declaring goods, and I do not feel guilty doing so.

I'm going 'cause I have three vouchers that are about to expire, so I combine them all and add the 50 to it, hee hee.

How long did it take for you to get the conditional approval and then book your appt?

TIA

3 days for conditional approval, took about 3 weeks from approval to actual interview.

Trick is to be like a hawk and always scan for cancellations lol. Helps if you work behind a computer. I was originally suppose to have my interview in April.

You never know......... I get out of it by using my free 5 dollar slot play vouchers that I get on seniors day. I amalgamate them and go with that.

Ban you as in no more e-mail deals. Not ban you from premises, lol.

And, I didn't get the e-mail, lol.

Has anyone ever had an experience with purchasing a cat or other small pet from a US breeder and bringing it back across the border? I'm looking at buying a purebred cat and bringing it back since I'm having no luck with my sought after breed in Canada.

Declare your cat.
Bring an invoice for the cat.
Bring any certificates you may need.
Pay inspection fees / and/or taxes.

"If travelling with pets, know that dogs and cats that are three months of age or older need valid
signed and dated certificates from a veterinarian verifying vaccinations against rabies.
These are usually valid for 1-3 years. Service dogs are exempt when accompanied by their owners"

Also:
Food, Plant and Animal Inspections - Inspection fees

Thank you.

I've already looked into all of this. I was curious if anyone has actually done it themselves and was able to share an experience.

EDIT: Found a local breeder with the colour that I was looking for, so importing is no longer necessary.
