3:30 am
90% of the time I see these late night cyclists without reflective clothing or don't have reflectors/flashing lights on the front and back of the bike.
Infact, I saw one wearing black with one tiny rear reflector on westminster hwy at 12am last night.

RIP. Doesn't matter the time or what the cyclist was or wasn't wearing. If you hit someone, don't take off. Driver probably thought he could get away with it since no one was around at 0330.
I was recently hit by a car that ran a stop sign while I was riding my bike in Richmond. Luckily for me, my injuries weren't life threatening and the driver remained on the scene to phone 911.

i like riding my bike at night (in designated bike routes), but i have two hi-beam red lights, one flasher led headlight and a hi powered led riding light. even with that i sometimes fear from the close calls i get. people just do not give a shit about cyclist in vancouver.
i ride only on sun-wed.

I was in the area when this happened
I remember hearing a screeching ish sound. Then heard bunch of cops coming.
I was at a house couple of streets away yet it was sooo clear.
Totally didn't expect a hit and run. RIP victim hope the suspect gets charged accordingly.

As said, if you hit someone, you could be the difference between that person living or dying by staying on the scene. Once you leave the scene, I believe it shows intent, and its comparable to murder.

Driver should never have left. No excuses there and now this accident becomes 100% his fault and problem and I hope he gets what he deserves
BUT,
Cyclist was probably doing something stupid or not wearing appropriate clothing and riding an appropriately kitted bike.

Listen, if you read the actual article, there's numerous mentions of speed, and debris everywhere. And a license plate that had fallen off the car.
Yet somehow your extraordinary powers of deduction brought you to the conclusion (or assumption, whatever) that the cyclist was probably doing something stupid.
There are news articles that are posted to RS, and some members feeling the necessity to come out and say "well the victim probably deserved it." What does that accomplish? If you weren't there, don't go making assumptions. That's all I'm saying.

I've talked to instructors at motorcycle riding schools and they suggest the same thing...I'm not gonna leave the onus of my safety to some asshole that just had a fifth of vodka and is now behind wheels.
better safe than sorry...at least in a car there's crumple zone/frames/airbags to hopefully absorb most of the impact for you.

Only 24 years old. He fucked up big time.
If something like this happens (god forbid) stay at the scene, call 911 and help as much as you possibly can. They call it am accident for a reason.

being 3am... and long weekend...and the driver's age... and the fact that the driver tried to get away, I am going to GUESS there was probably alcohol involved.

If you get into a car accident of any sort, you stay at the scene. If anyone is hurt, you call 911. It's simple as that.

Where does anyone imply his age is an excuse? I'm sure he is alluding to the fact the guy is pretty young to have already decided to ruin his life.

I wouldn't be surprised if a 14 year old has the instinct to flee. But 24? That's fxxked up.
