What Sequel Is Better Than The Original?

I was watching Aliens yesterday, which just happens to be one of my all time favourite movies, and I got to thinking that despite how good the original one was, this one was just so much better. That in itself led to myself thinking about what other sequels are considered superior to the one that came before it.

Of course I've forgotten most of what I had thought, but here's my short list:

Aliens
The Empire Strikes Back
Bad Boys 2

What would you add to this list?

I find it only surprising when sequels are better than the original when sequels weren't planned beforehand.

often times trilogies that are planned in advance have the original create the background, 2nd one to build upon that and the final one to conclude of which can sometimes be underwhelming because of the bar set by the first 2.

I'd add Godfather Pt 2 to the list

I see this happen a lot in video game campaigns as well where the 2nd installment eclipse the first in story and in game mechanics.

I think a better question is which remake is better than the original...that'll be a much more impressive feat but it'll also be subjective to the era you grew up in

The only one I can think of from the top of my head is Wrath of Khan just because I am a geek lol.. I thought it was better than the original motion picture.

Hmm, not sure if it would qualify, but Stargate SG-1 was way better than the original Stargate movie.

I think Mission Impossible 3 was better than the first, 2nd, and 4th movie of the series.

Toy Story 2!

Godfather part 2
Lord of the rings 2

Superman 2 arguably i guess, and it was meant to be 1 movie not split in two so..... yeah :P

Toy Story 3 . If you've watched the previous 2, it gets you.
