Mazda Furai concept car is gone, and guess who we have to blame?

Top Gear.

Wonder if this is gonna make the next season?

Quote:
The beautiful Mazda Furai Concept car has suffered a most untimely death at the hands of none other than Top Gear.

The magazine was driving the one-off prototype as part of their 20th anniversary issue when the car caught fire and burnt to a crisp. It is unknown at this stage why the fire occurred.

Top Gear has released a statement saying, "forgive us, for we have sinned. Top Gear is responsible for the untimely demise of the quite remarkable Mazda Furai Concept, and we're very, very sorry."

The Furai, meaning 'sound of the wind,' was unveiled at the 2008 New York International Auto Show in Detroit. Powered by a 20B three-rotor wankel rotary engine producing 340kW of power and mated to a six-speed X-Trac semi-automatic transmission, the futuristic Furai was the last in the line of Mazda's 'Nagare' concept cars beginning in 2006.

The car was adorned with the competition number '55', as a tribute to Mazda's 1991 Le Mans winning 787B.
Hope they're insured.

I can smell the jokes in the first ep of the next season...

But again... what good is a now 5 year old concept car if they weren't going to go any further than the concept stage?

Would love to know what the bill is going to be.

What's the body made out of? It burns weird.

I mean, Lomac is here, maybe you can provide a more in depth analysis on the charred remains of a mazda(), but I'm assuming the whole body is composite? Also the front opening looks weird to me...is it actually an opening? Why is it crusted over with char?

It's a rotary. The Stig knows what to do with one of those, the result is what you see.

I remember like a decade ago I was at a BBQ with my supercharged S2000 and some kid with a black FD RX-7 rolled up to the driveway of my friend's place. His exhaust and BOV were crazy loud and the car had some sweet 20 inch bronze wheels. Ended up chatting for a bit and he seemed pretty cocky about handing my 357 rwhp S2000 it's ass. I told him we should meet up and race the next day, as I had already had a few drinks and wasn't leaving until much, much later.

I cracked a joke about how his FD's apex seals probably wouldn't survive until tomorrow to get a race against me off, and he just laughed it off as "rumor" that the rotary was weak and he blamed shitty tuners for that "myth"

He then took a hot chick at the party for a ride in his car, 10 minutes later I hear this rough rumbling car pull into the driveway, the chick walks into the party, and then I hear the car limp off down the block. Turns out the guy blew an apex seal giving the girl a ride in his car!

I've only known 1 person with an FD to actually have enjoyed owning the car!

not what i expected... i was imagining an assassination attempt on the stig, the car explodes in flames and the stig simply walks out of the carnage suit still pristine white and untouched.

at least it went out in true supercar immolation style. next time: halon fire-suppression system.

I found this on Wikipedia.

Quote:
In September 2013, it was revealed that the car had been destroyed by fire during road tests by Top Gear in 2008.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Furai
Quote:
We're not exactly sure how this story managed to stay under wraps for so long, but back in 2008 the car was with the popular television show's crew and it wound up on fire. There's been no official commentary on how this happened just yet, as this story is making its way into 20th anniversary special for the show's magazine. It's a shame that this happened, but we're dying to find out more about how it happened.
