| Looking for new laptop/ultrabook
As per title, looking to get a new notebook. The one that I've my eye on is the Gigabyte U24F, does anyone have any reason not to go with it, or any other suggestions?
Budget: around $1000
Thin and light, ideally
Haswell and discrete graphics (740M or better)
Under 15"
Decent battery life would be good, 5 hrs?
Replacing a M1530, will be running some games and CAD software.
Thanks! Posted via RS Mobile |

There aren't really many ultra books that have discrete graphics since the point of them is thin and light with long battery. There's also the Razer blade. Not sure if they've updated to haswell chips yet though.

^As for the Gigabyte, quality should be fairly good. You can probably use the U2442 as a reference of sorts. Battery life won't be great though, other similar setups are pushing maybe 4-5 hours just web browsing (Check out the Asus N550JV for a comparison). Oh, and if you do plan on using the GPU for whatever CAD work that it will work with, iirc ATI cards actually do quite a lot better with that.
Yeah, looking at what's out there right now, it seems that my best choice is probably the Samsung Ativ Book 8, forgetting the weight at least it is still thin. Packs a punch, and around 8-10 hours too, only thing is the price...

THINKPAD T440P AND T540P series are coming out with Haswell as well by November so I can wait a bit. W540 is too bulky IMO despite the specs. Never had a Thinkpad before but I currently have an Ideapad and its POS. I'm highly considering the Thinkpad though as Lenovo usually offers very good discounts during Black Friday. Lenovo brings Haswell to rest of ThinkPad line-up, including monstrous ThinkPad W540
I spec'd out a Dell 14 XPS as well but didn't have room upgrades.
All in all, mine comes down to Haswell, SSD, GPU, 14" HD, and 16GB RAM. Mainly using it for rendering, CAD modeling, and Photoshop.

As it is, the y410p/y510p are pretty good for the price, and there's usually a sale for a few hundred off MSRP. I only wish the battery and display were a bit better.
I think you can also check out the HP 15-j000, there have been some pretty good reviews on those. Personally I have a liking towards HP and Dell's customer service, particularly Dell's.

Looks like the new X240 & T440s will be getting nicer screens!

Hmm the X240 looks pretty decent. Especially with the HD IPS screen and the 3lb weight. I'll be waiting for the EPP sales hehe

i got the i7 with the 256GB SSD, i been using it for abt a week now, can easily do 6 hours, as i use it during most of my 8 hour shift... granted i am on headphones, and maybe 20% brightness, as there is barely any glare in my office anyways

What do you guys use it for and what settings do you have it on?
I had the screen on dimmest, volume around 30%, wifi and bluetooth on, keyboard backlit on dimmest maybe 50% of the time, otherwise it's off.
Mainly used to watch shows, internet and Outlook.

Screen on dim 20% maybe? wifi on, BT off, keyboard backlit off. But if you're mainly watching shows that's gonna drain more battery. I used it for work and internet mainly.

Screen on 20%, wifi BT both on, as I use a BT mouse, keyboard backlit off. uses mainly for emails/browsing and the occasional youtube... but that is it
