Hike, Bike, Quad or 4x4 - Where did RS go today?

1. If it's vaguely outdoors related - post it up!
2. Pictures are always welcome, but not at all necessary.

Seeing as fall is upon us and I personally tend to get out more I figured I'd start this up. I just got back from camping out at Peaches and Creme Falls, which I discovered on the first RS trip out to the Elaho river (thanks again, RS - never would have scouted campsites that far from my normal stomping grounds). Saw 2 people leaving the falls as we were pulling up but didn't see another soul on the Elaho main. Probably were the only people for 20kms in any direction last night. Fairly warm too - I had to have two windows open to get to sleep. Probably didn't need one of my heavier bags...

Thanks! This time around there were only the two vehicles so I could hammer on the brakes and take pictures of things. Too bad I gave away my dslr.

The pathy kept up behind me the entire way and I wasn't exactly going slow. Traction and dampening are no problem for it. Clearance is however.

What about running Whipsaw? HAHAHAHAHAAH

Phil@rise 09-25-2013 10:51 AM

ran everything but lol

RHMadness 09-25-2013 10:11 PM

Went through Whipsaw a few weeks back for an end of the summer camping trip.. We tried to find the god damn lake and couldnt lol... so we ended up on top of the mountain and just camped there.. Was so much fun.. My truck is fairly stock and it didnt have too much of a problem.. just have to be careful on the super dips if you have side bars and a low front bumper.. I have an iron cross, 35s and about a 3ish inch lift... Was fun AS HELL!!!

Been to triangle beach almost everyday since I fish there and hit up some trails after. It's never a dull moment at triangle.

As I was going out to Agassiz to help my mother pick up a side of beef, I decided to take advantage of the nice weather this afternoon to go for a hike up around Hicks Lake. Pretended I was 12 again and chased some geese into the water (where they smugly mocked me from the middle of the lagoon knowing I wasn't about to follow them in). Some people up there up there fishing but the general consensus was that it's just not well stocked anymore and none of the guys I chatted with had anything tangible to show for their time. On the way out I was just about to help some parks staff who'd managed to run down their battery and then I realized that my jumper cables are in my recovery gear container which I took out as I'd only expected to go out to pick up the meat. Oops. Definitely time to finish my rear storage compartments.

Oh yeah and while we were at Hicks at the initial day use area, I noticed one bench that I can only imagine is a wheelchair accessible picnic table. I don't think I've ever seen one of those before.

Phil@rise 09-26-2013 06:21 PM

lots of provincial campsites have tables like that for wheelchair users

Brianrietta 09-26-2013 08:05 PM

Neato. I guess I generally don't venture into the parks all that often as if I'm trying to get out into nature I'd rather do it away from the crowds but I figured I'd have seen one before. From my recent memory I know there aren't any at Ross, Silver Beach or Cinnemousun Narrows (the latter obviously not as it's boat access only).

So I headed up to Kelowna for a week yesterday - kicked it off today with exploring out around Myra Canyon trying to remember where all my old camping spots were:

Hopefully the weather stays at least kind of nice for the next couple of days and I can try to hit up some of the little lakes out here.

Lomac 09-28-2013 11:05 PM

I braved Richmond today in the Pathy.

Pretty sure I accidentally ran over a couple of lowered Miata's.

:fullofwin:

Nah, quickly went up and down Triangle Beach before seeing a movie at the theatre. That rear suspension is still fucked. :lol

Brianrietta 10-01-2013 10:23 PM

Don't worry guys - soon I'll be back home and probably slow down a bit. My phone died so I took less photos than usual but oh well.

Today my friends up here and I headed out on the Beaver Lake FSR to do some exploring and hit up some lakes. We hit up Beaver Lake, Lost Lake and I think we drove past Echo Lake but I can't confirm that. The Beaver Lake Recreation Site was pretty rugged but in a great spot, and is the first campsite I've ever been to with cows wandering around grazing in it. One appeared to be policing the outhouse there too. Only ran into a lone hunter in the bush and a few people around the lakes; I was a little surprised that there weren't more people out trying to fish or hunt. Took a couple of offshoot trails along the way that I thought might lead up to higher ground and better viewpoints but those almost all ended with us getting into an ugly spot and realizing I was probably on an ATV trail. Reverse gear got a good workout today.

Tomorrow I'm heading back to the coast and I'm thinking I'll probably make an overnight stop somewhere out around Kane Valley or out on the Coldwater somewhere. We'll see what the weather is like, I guess.

Brianrietta 10-07-2013 10:10 PM

This afternoon I had a bit of free time so I went out to Chilliwack Lake for a drive and to try to find some fall colour in the trees. The overcast skies didn't help but this has been a pretty poor year thus far for leaves changing colours. The occasional gold and even less common burst of orange or red from what looked like mostly vine maple are the sole highlights of a dreary end to summer's green. Lots of brown and ugly brown-green leaves already down on the ground. I can't win them all I guess (and after experiencing four Ontario and Quebec autumns in a row I'm not sure I should even be trying...)

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psa288d3be.jpg

After the persistent rain forced me back into my 4Runner I headed back and went on the recently rebuilt/cleared road heading up Ford Mountain. I rarely make it out quite that far as I normally camp up Pierce Mountain or Creek if I'm headed out that way so it was neat to go up something new. After noticing progress on a parking area at the Post Creek/Greendrop trailhead (thank god, no more digging my vehicle out from the side after snowplows run through) I thought maybe the new look was a new parking area for a hiking trail up Ford but the roads all over and up to near the summit were in remarkably good shape.

No pictures but it's vaguely outdoors related. Finally took the Pathfinder out on it's first trailer haul session. lol. Had to do some landfill dump runs and the insurance on the Blazer ran out a few days ago. Apparently no one sells a flat 4 (three male, one female) to circle 7 pin (male) adapter, so I had to make my own in order to legally run the trailer. Also got a chance to try out the 4x4 on my property by hauling a bunch of wood up a steep hill to the burn pit. Decided to give it a try instead of using the tractor. Even with currently crappy tires on it, it still made it up the wet grassy hill like a champ.

Took the sidekick to a lookout over buntzen lake. I've had it for 2 years and average is 6.1L/100km with the vw turbodiesel engine. Really want to do a 3rd gen 4runner or tacoma vw tdi swap now.

My recovery kit consisted of a Toyota with vw turbodiesel swap

Furry?

I've gotta get my 4Runner a new alternator and go exploring after I'm over this flu or whatever. Haven't been anywhere in over a month... Alternator is trippin balls and spiking to like 18v.

T4RAWR 01-05-2014 07:56 AM

yep went up furry.

road was clear in the lower sections, no snow.

Brianrietta 01-05-2014 03:56 PM

Nice. Well in an attempt to blast the last of this cold or flu out of me I decided to go hiking and try to get some fresh air. Went out up to the Mt. Hope Lookout to see if a good grind wouldn't help. Started up the hill, took like 6 pictures and realized I hadn't plugged in my phone and the battery was about dead so all you get is the sign with me posing like an idiot blocking it and some hoar that looked cool. When I got back down I plugged in my phone and then took a few shots along the river and then drove home. Beautiful day to be outside.

Went with a few BCJC buds up Sylvester Rd. and found a fun and challenging yet stock-friendly route down to Stave, in which my little almost-stock YJ had to recover a COD Rubicon JK from a mud hole on route... then had lunch and some fun playing in the mud, where a pair of ATVs helped un-stuck the lifted TJ and XJ that were with us :fullofwin:

How did the new tires do/which do you have on?

Soundy 01-05-2014 09:59 PM

Rolling on the Silent Armors... man, I am frikken LOVING these tires. Only time I actually got stuck was when the right rear sank deep in a hole, other than that they just wouldn't quit. Quiet on the road, way smoother/less twitchy ride than the old LTX's. My ancient little compressor is just about dead so I drove all the way home with 20-25 PSI in them (first tire done got the most... last one got very little) and still had a pretty good ride on the pavement.
