$21,000??? no thanks

I'd consider it for $12,000.
Even at that price, I'd get a Nissan Versa, Mazda 2, Dodge Dart or something.

well, at least they are trying... i still remember that disaster with the brillance bs6 that earned itself the title of being the poster child of chinese safety standards.

i don't claim to be an expert so i just see a lot of different colors in the pic below (taken from jalopnik)... but do all cars have that hoop (shown in red) that supports the roof above the doors?

If it gets released over here at $21,000... thats a good deal.. from the pictures you get tons of features that you wouldnt normally get at that price...

If you say thats its a chinese brand and you wouldnt touch it.. take a look around your house and see how many items are made in china.. IMHO...

but do you think these car makers actally make the cars tougher for these test and when production comes, they cheap out??

16000EUR conversion to CDN got us to the $21000CDN figure. is this just a case of a really bad exchange rate, or is this car supposed to be cheaper? for example, what does a simliar market range skoda or seat cost?

There's a difference between made in China (but engineered/designed elsewhere) vs designed and made in China.

At one point not long ago, that was said about the Koreans, and before that the Japanese, ect.

IIRC, they take random cars from production to test.

I'd give it a few years to see the reliability but heck, 10 years ago no one wanted a Korean car and look at the road now. Half the cars I see are Hyundai or Kia. Sharp looking car IMO.

Hyundai/Kia never had the stigma of being a dangerous car, just terrible build quality/reliability.

I would expect any Chinese brand to have to jump over both, build quality and safety.

Although this "Made in China" car scored 5 stars with Euro NCAP, I'm assuming that Transport Canada still has to ensure these cars passes its own safety tests before they even have a chance of being imported into Canada for sale.

Euro NCAP has much more stringent standards compared to Canadian safety tests IIRC, but that doesn't mean I don't think it would pass those tests with flying colors.

this was posted a while ago:

small kia/hyundai cars used to be pretty dangerous too.

so the assumption now is that Timpo has bad taste and has no money?

(FWIW, Timpo had a veilside kitted FD in the early-mid 2000s)

time travel to back 1983, when hyundai had this:

sonata (aka. stellar in canada)

pony (RWD!)

to this today:

it took 30 years for korea to get this far, and the 80's was the age of the dinosaur compared to today. china may do the same if not better, faster, etc.

I had a Pony. Yeah, that was some scary thin tin around me. I remember having to keep the heat on in the summer when I went over the Coquihalla, otherwise the car would over heat. I would pick up a hitchhiker or two, just in case I needed a push off the road. Ahhhh memories.

I'm interested to see what happens with these Chinese cars - the North American market is already flooded. We'll see, I guess.

With the extreme advancement in technology, what took 30 years for Kia/Hyundai will take max 10 for China.

I've seen an article about this.

Chery and Geely were supposed to be in the US long time ago, but they decided not to because it was way too costly for them.

Right now, China is the largest automotive industry in the world, they're just too busy trying to dominate the Chinese market, they don't care too much about American market...well at least not for the price they have to pay to make it US compatible.
