| Michelin Pilot Super Sport opinions?
Hey there,
I have some shitty tires to last me until next spring, and since I was curious to see what would be the best tire to put on the 5.0 BMW, I've been reading reviews on Tire Rack.
It would seem that the MPSS are at the top of the pack in terms of reviews, anyone here have personal experience with them, or offer any rave reviews on other tires?
Thanks |

It's either the Super Sports or the Continental DW's for me when my current tires wear out. My feelings on how much I want to spend will determine which one I ultimately get.
Here was a good read I thought: Monsters of Grip: Nine Summer-Performance Tires Tested Comparison Tests - Page 10 - Car and Driver

It would seem that the MPSS are at the top of the pack in terms of reviews, anyone here have personal experience with them, or offer any rave reviews on other tires? | Here is my Coles notes summary:
1) Michelin PSS - best performing tire (short of the autox/track grade stuff), but a little pricey
2) Continental DW (do not confuse with DWS) - almost nearly as grippy as PSS, but the soft sidewalls makes steering feel and turn in noticeably worse than PSS. Ride quality is superb due to soft sidewalls. Prices are very affordable too.
3) BFG g-Force Sport COMP-2 - not quite as high performance as the above 2, but it is another excellent all round choice.

I have them. Best "street" summer tires money can buy. Excellent in both dry and wet and very good treadwear so far.

I have it on my Z, insane grip both wet and dry roads Love them, though they do have thick sidewalls so be slightly cautious as something like 255/35 PSS would be a bit bigger than 255/35 Hankook V12s for example. Something to think about if you might be close to rubbing with your current tire set up.
Been using it for about half a year now and I find that tread wears out quite quickly actually. Pricey but I still plan to buy these again for my next set of tires |

Running them since summer. Awesome tires in both wet and dry roads but they are expensive. I was going to get Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position but I had to wait for them and couldn't. For what I need, I think I would go with Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position next time as they perform very well but cost quite a bit less.

Question for you MPSS owners:
- Are you running the tires on a stock or near stock alignment?
- If Yes - How is the tire wear and how many seasons or KMs have you gotten out of them?
- If no - Are you running the tires on an aggressive track/street alignment with coilovers and camber kit?
- How is the tire wear and how many seasons or KMs have you gotten out of them?

I went with the Conti DW's myself, the PSS's in the same size were over $300 more than the DW's and I was more set towards having ride comfort than turn in feel.

While on topic of tires
Anyone have experience with Toyo R888?
The car is used for spring/summer but concerned how they will do in the rain if I get caught in it.

I went from 19" Pirelli RFT's to 21" PS2 and I couldn't believe the massive improvement went it came to ride quality. I'm not going to be driving my car during the winter but the tires do grip better in colder weather than my Pirelli's.

I bought the super sports specifically because they were reported as being a bit narrower for a given size vs others. For speed3's depending on brand 235/40/18's would rub (stock height on 8" wide RX8 rims). The super sports have never rubbed on me even with 4 people in the car and luggage in the back. I looked at the conti's but no definitive answer to whether they would rub or not.
The ride quality is way better than the stock potenza re050's, which only lasted me 35k. Posted via RS Mobile

Not meaning to thread jack but how do the Potenza Pole Position S-04 compare to MPSS?
I know the MPSS grip very well, experienced it at my old job lol

Tires tested:
Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position (Max Performance Summer 225/45R17 91Y)
What We Liked: Responsive steering and confidence-inspiring handling
What We'd Improve: A little more ultimate grip in the dry and wet
Conclusion: A capable tire that feels great from behind the wheel
Latest Test Rank: 2nd
Previous Test Rank: Not previously tested
Continental ExtremeContact DW (Max Performance Summer 225/45R17 91W)
What We Liked: Comfortable road manners
What We'd Improve: Sharpen steering response and handling precision
Conclusion: Plenty of ultimate grip with very good ride quality
Latest Test Rank: 3rd
Previous Test Rank: 1st (October '10), 3rd (June '09)
Michelin Pilot Super Sport (Max Performance Summer 225/45R17 94Y)
What We Liked: "Wow" handling and ultimate traction
What We'd Improve: Soften the ride just a little on big bumps to make everyday commuting more civilized
Conclusion: This is the new super star in the Max Performance Summer category
Latest Test Rank: 1st
Previous Test Rank: Not previously tested
Pirelli P Zero (Max Performance Summer 225/45R17 94Y)
What We Liked: Composed road manners and handling
What We'd Improve: Reduce tread noise somewhat
Conclusion: An older but still capable tire that can't quite match the capability of newer tires
Latest Test Rank: 4th
Previous Test Rank: 4th (June '09), 1st (August '07)
