Invictus (2009)

Invictus is a 2009 biographical sports drama film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. The story is based on the John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation about the events in South Africa before and during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which was hosted in that country following the dismantling of apartheid. Freeman and Damon play, respectively, South African President Nelson Mandela and François Pienaar, the captain of the South Africa rugby union team, the Springboks.
didn't even know that, but no. the whole point of the joke is that all black males look the same. (ex. when someone posts a picture of michael jordan people say "wow, will smith looking old as fuck")

He did, but Paul Walker contributed more to the lives of people in this particular forum. So I doubt this thread will hit 10 pages.

RIP nelson mandela

i'm not old enough to have witnessed his greatness, but having read about the apartheid... this man accomplished something miraculous and helped the world rid itself of a lot of hate and racism

The man was 95 years old, we all expected him to go sometime soon.
It's not a shock like Paul Walker's fiery crash death was.

It's been expected but still very sad that the day has arrived that he passes on. The world is losing one of the last few, imo, true role models it has and I don't think most of us (not even I) can fully appreciate his significance.

He fought for Freedom and Justice long after he achieved it for himself and his country, he continued to fight for those who've yet to receive theirs (Palestinians) and I have my utmost respect for him and he will be, and is already, missed.

I was recently able to go to Robben Island and see the prison and room he stayed in. As a born South African, I truly feel that on both sides of the spectrum, Black and White, he is a monumental man and loved by most of the country. I agree with some of the above commentators, I don't think I will ever be able to truly understand what he did for his country and for our world. He is a true testament to the power of one individual.

The difference about the death between the two men was, an unexpected death is a tragedy, often an expected death is almost a relief for someone who was at the end of their life, suffering health problems and struggling to stay alive. Either way, there is no reason to compare two great people that died, especially based on how many fucking pages their threads get to and why someone deserves it more. Thats just genuinely retarded.
RIP Mandela. He has done much for the world, that people who haven't experienced what he has done directly can never truly understand how massive it is, but merely respect it from afar and try to comprehend it.

A true man of the people. Hopefully we will see more great figures rise and bring the countries of this planet together rather than drive us apart.

I've heard some point out that as important as Mandela was to his own nation, he wasn't really that big a figure on the world stage... or words to that effect. While this may TECHNICALLY be true, I'm seeing lots of posts like this one my friend put on her FB status this morning:

Quote:
Nelson Mandela literally changed my life. When my daughters were small and I was struggling with PPD I read a passage that he wrote from his inaugural speech, which unfortunately in these days of false information on the internet keeps getting credited to Marianne Williamson .... Here it is.
1. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
A big part of what makes a "great person" great is the way they see things, and their ability to share that view in a meaningful way. Mandela may not have been a mover and shaker of international politics, but his words and actions definitely had an impact on a lot of people's lives the world over... and that has far greater long-term potential than any political moves.

Edit: I've since realized, the quote IS actually by Marianne Williamson... but the sentiment still holds true.

Dalai Lama barred from South Africa to attend Mandela's memorial service because there "wasn't enough time" to handle his Visa paperwork (because they didnt want to piss off China) what a way to remember/honour Mandela -_-

It's too bad that it takes death to do that. Far too often, even now, I keep overhearing "Who's Nelson Mandela?" by younger kids.
