Predicting Traffic Light Times with Traffic light Assist Software - testing phase

Came across this article about the CES show and Audi's TLA system (under the testing phase).

Uses the onboard WiFi to predict traffic light patterns and display traffic light times on dashboard.

Pretty cool if the times are accurate (hence the testing phase...).

What do you guys think?

Quote:
The Audi buzz at this year’s International Consumer and Electronics Show is all about its matrix laser headlights, but the German automaker showed off another innovative gadget that, coincidentally, is also all about the lights.

At the show, Autoblog sampled an A6 equipped with what Audi calls TLA, or Traffic Light Assist. Unlike adaptive cruise control systems, TLA doesn’t utilize a camera to determine the colour of the traffic light ahead. Instead, the system uses the car’s onboard WiFi system to pull local information about traffic light patterns. It then does a few calculations by taking into account the direction (and lane position) of the car to figure out how much time you have until the light changes.

Audi's Traffic Light Assist helps you beat evil red lights. TLA uses the car's on-board WiFi system to pull traffic light patterns. The info is then displayed onto the instrument cluster.

The information is relayed to the driver via an appropriate traffic light icon displayed on the instrument panel, as well as a countdowm timer. As long as your car has a Stop/Start system, it’s also integrated with TLA and switches the engine back on seconds before the light changes to green. The system also adjusts itself based on your lane, so if you come to a left-turn signal, you’ll still know low long you’ll have to hit the green arrow.

Autoblog says the installation process, at least for the A6, is nothing more than reprogramming the car’s CPU. Audi doesn’t have a firm timeline on introducing Traffic Light Assist, but it’s currently testing the gadget in Germany, Italy and Las Vegas for CES.

that display can do a lot but having to look down before making a decision could have some costs..

This is a horrible idea, now you're giving people more of a reason not to pay attention to the road in front of you. I really do not get the point of this at all.

It's just a tech gimmick, my S-class has whatever brake assist sensors, and my sister's b-class has that auto parking system, there is no way someone will rely on these system on the road.

We will hold you to those words.

Just like some people believe cruise control means they can take a nap.

Leave it up to the Germans to design even more useless junk to put in a car.

It's funny because Germany is the last place that feature would be useful.

In Germany, before the lights turn green, they briefly turn amber to give you 1 second or so to engage 1st gear/ get ready to go. This allows the traffic to flow that much more smoothly.

Why this idea hasn't been implemented anywhere else is beyond me. It makes the flow of traffic is so much smoother and quicker.

I let distronic plus drive the car half the time

BAS plus does help in applying more brake pressure depending on the distance from the car infront.

This is the norm in Hong Kong and some other parts of Asia... But I always thought yellow meant "pre-stage"

Traffic lights like this are very common in a lot of countries around the world... The three light system is as well, where the light goes from Red to Amber to Green. Both of these systems help with traffic flow

i personnaly don't like the eco start/stop feature. It pretty seamless but I can't imagine having that feature on a car with performance exhaust. I imagine it will get pretty annoying hearing the car stop and start up every green light

I don't understand, exactly what information is being downloaded by the car in order to formulate these countdowns?

I sense serious trouble stemming from this, especially if it is inaccurate, which as of right now I fail to understand how it could be accurate...

why don't people just countdown, it's pretty standard how many seconds the red stays on. And once the other side hits red, count 3 "one thousand" and you're guaranteed a green.
