Official 2014 Formula 1 Season Thread

It's 2014 and it's time for a new Formula 1 thread!

Less than two weeks to go until McLaren unveils the MP4-29. Everyone pretty much starts on square one now. New engines, new chassis and new regulations. I haven't been this excited for the start of the F1 season in awhile. The last few seasons showed just how dominant the combination of RBR and Vettel was. Let's hope all the top teams are on the same page, so we can have some epic races.

Launches scheduled so far:

Jan 24 McLaren MP4-29
Jan 28 Mercedes W05z
Jan 28 Caterham

Preseason testing starts on January 28th in Jerez!

Anyone placing some early bets? Jules Bianchi is 5000/1 to win the 2014 F1 WDC

John Button RIP

Don't forget, it wasn't always v8-v12s. BMW had the M12/13 in the 80s, which was a 4 banger turbo, and Renault had a V6 turbo in the 70s. Even Ferrari and Honda had V6 engines, so it will be interesting to see how the new engines perform. But I do agree about some of the rules and restrictions. At least teams should be free to use any cylinder number and arrangement, as it used to be.

I'm looking forward to how this season is going to shake up.

If they limit the fuel flow to 100kg/h, I don't get why they bother limiting displacement, configuration, RPM etc...

Open up the specs, the most efficient setups will win the races...

RIP John Button, I met him walking the streets of Montreal in 2012.

For the first time in many years, I am finding it hard to get excited for F1 given the sheer boredom of last year.

Most likely that will change the week or two before the 1st race, but right now I have NFL fever.

Absolutely brilliant drive by Jenson. It was probably his best race ever.

Look at how happy Jenson's dad was

I just hope that there is an even playing field this year. Watching a team consistently winning by 20+s is boring af.

So Vettel is gone? Or do RBR have to start all over again with a new design?

can't wait for the season to start.. gonna separate the men from the boys this year with reduced downforce levels at places like eau rouge

will try to make it to singapore and montreal gp's

i was lucky enough to hear the last of the v10's in person, v8's with unlimited rpm and now look forward to hear the v6 turbo's.

something new is always interesting the new rule shakeup couldnt have come at a better time, its been a long long time since anything interesting was introduced

Fears grow that Michael Schumacher will be in a coma for the rest of his life | Mail Online

Quote:
Fears grow that Michael Schumacher will be in a coma for the rest of his life because he has still not recovered enough to be woken

Fears are growing in Germany that stricken F1 legend Michael Schumacher may be in a coma for the rest of his life.

German weekly news magazine Focus reported that 'Schumacher could be in a coma forever' after speaking with experts on his condition.

Bild newspaper also reported that his condition is so grave that there are currently no plans to wake him.

He has been in an artificially induced state of unconsciousness for 18 days now and the silence from his management and the medical teams treating him in Grenoble, France, lead many to fear the worst.

The coma means that oxygen to his brain is reduced, therefore it works less and is better placed to recover from the injuries sustained during a low-speed ski accident on December 29.

But Schumacher, 44, has not recovered anywhere near sufficiently to be awoken from his coma, leading to the speculation that he might be committed to it for the rest of his days.

'There may have been complications', said neurosurgeon Andreas Zieger of the University Clinic for neurosurgery in Oldenburg to Focus magazine.

'We should not speculate here. Ultimately, we are talking about life and death. A coma can in theory be maintained for a lifetime. It won’t hurt the human brain.'

But side effects include anaesthetic increasingly stressing the liver, muscle breakdown and rises in intracranial pressure as a result of cerebrospinal fluid not circulating efficiently.

Professor Zieger added: 'Brain injuries are among the most complicated injuries that can happen to the human body.

'Predictions about how long a person might be in a coma or potential complications are seldom reliable.'

Cologne neurological expert Professor Gereon Fink fears that his long coma indicates serious damage in the brain and that his condition remains critical.
'He assumes that Michael Schumacher’s health condition is apparently worse than hoped for,' reported a news website.

'If the injuries are so severe that it would harm the patient, he is kept longer in the medically induced coma,' said professor Fink.

'Depending on where bleeding has taken place can lead to unilateral paralysis, speech disorders or personality changes.'

Schumacher, whose wife Corinna and two children are maintaining a constant bedside vigil in France, has undergone two operations since the accident at the resort of Meribel and has undergone fresh scans this week.

German media said that the risk of brain haemorrhage remain high and why he is still classified as critically ill.

His catastrophic accident has already had a knock-on effect for some current racing drivers who, according to Bild newspaper, have now been issued with a list of off-track activities they are now banned from undertaking.

Bild says skiing, motocross and motorbike riding are out.

Red Bull, it reports, has banned driver Daniel Ricciardo from surfing in the sea off his hometown of Perth in Australia because of the danger of shark attacks.
Ferrari says it has issued no such directives to its drivers saying: 'We trust our drivers to be able to decide what is dangerous and what is not.'

Massa is banned from being near any tyres

As for Schumacher it's all speculation and it sells more papers to speculate the worst but it is a bit unnerving that the public hasn't been given any positive updates or updates at all :/

I find it crazy that F1 at one time used to be the most dangerous/highest death rate sport in the world. Now the drivers are getting banned from their off-track activities because they're too dangerous.

Understandable, if you consider what happened to Kubica. F1 isn't like soccer, where you can simply replace an injured player with a handful of others.
