So who has 'cut the cable'? and what are you using as alternative?

i'm seriously thinking of getting rid of SHAW for their cable/HD and going with internet based channels instead.

I have 4 TVs in the house... each either has a WDTV hooked up OR a 'SMART TV' device like a bluray player so they all have internet/wifi access with the necessary apps built in.

i'm thinking... cut shaw, keep internet... subscribe to:

Netflix USA $8
Hulu Plus $8

USA IP via unotelly $5

the only thing is the sporting events which apparently are pretty tricky to get? preferably NHL and NFL if possible.

so have you cut your cable?

Cut it for about a year and a half now.

Netflix and Hulu, free DNS until Tunlr starts charging.

Also CityTV, Global, CTV, Comedy Network etc. all have free episodes of shows.

For hockey either OTA HD for CBC HNIC or find streams online (after the VLC streaming technique got busted).

My buddy in TO has the HD antenna and says you can get 8 channels free over the airwaves in HD?

That plus netflix and downloadables seems pretty tempting

Haven't had cable for 3 years. No regrets whatsoever. For one, I like saving money, but even if money was no object, I don't think I'd get it. I find one can waste so much time watching reruns and shit I've already seen. Would be nice for the occasional hockey game or awards show, but honestly I don't mind watching them later.

Better to pick and choose the things I want to watch, download or stream them, and spend time doing other things.

Netflix has a section dedicated to a tonne of kids shows, Disney XD streams some episodes for free online and I'm sure others do as well. Just search for the websites of the channels your kids watch and see what they stream.

in on this

I'm thinking of kicking shaw too since my promo runs out soon and it's going to more than double in price. My parent's aren't big fans of computers/laptop streaming so it'd have to be something user friendly

This looks amazing and is the perfect solution, but it's US only
http://dishworld.com/getroku/?cvosrc...affiliate=roku

I wonder how well HD streaming would work with Uno for a USA IP

Locally in Vancouver if you can see mount seymour from your house, you can get OTA channels in HD with a cheap $20 antenna

I haven't used it in a week but I'm pretty sure its still working?
I recall they did something to stop it about a month ago but there was already a work around it.

I live away from home for school and don't bother with cable.. Netflix and VPN's are the current method. I just stream sports online and although it's not HD, I'm not too worried about it.

Trying to convince my dad to cut his cable and home phone and just connect to my Netflix account and keep his work cell. He's always complaining that cable has the "same crap on every day" anyway.

Haven't ever had cable since I moved out.. never missed it.
Netflix + OTA HD + streaming videos/torrents gives me more than I need..

I also have an extra OTA HD Antenna i'll give out for cheap if anyone wants to try it out.

Check out MediaHint. Works wonders for Netflix and Hulu in a browser.

You need an HDTV with a built in ATSC tuner, and an antenna to hook up to the Coax/Cable input of your HDTV; even old rabbit ears will often be good enough to pick up one or two channels depending where you are located.
