Ruckus's are fun, but they are slow especially on hills. It takes a bit of modding and tuning to get up to speed, but it can be done. My ruckus right now tops out at about 80km/h w/ stock motor, I should get more speed once I get my Air/fuel guage hooked up so I can tune on the spot.

The drastic change in temps in Vancouver really change the performance of the scooter.

The Ruckus is really fun to tinker and you cant stop adding parts. Plus when you ride in a group of 10+ scooters, its like a mini parade. Everyone takes pics and waves at you.. Its good times.

IF you want something with more pep, then go with a Yamaha BWS or Honda DIO, they are both 2 stroke scooters and have much better pull.

Riding a scooter is like riding a fat chick, its only fun until your friends catch you.

If you are really serious in buying a Ruck, go with something that has a few mods(Variatorw/sliders, exhaust, up-jet). Becuase you will be doing this already, you might as well find one already done.

Or if you do end up with a stock one, make sure it's cheap!! Bc had a weird idea that a stock ruck with 15,000km is worth only $500 less than a brand new one. So make sure to shop around, and budget in immediate upgrades necessary, like dragon said. Variatior with weights, a good exhaust w/ a carb jet kit. And if it's stock brakes i seriously suggest at least a password jdm front end kit. Oh and a lowered seat frame is big for comfort. I had a mnnthbx seat frame and it was amazing. Actually i had almost everything mnnthbx made

Friend had a bws 2-stroke with a 80cc motor (high rpm racing crank, full top end, ignition), exhaust, 28mm pwk carb, full new cvt set up, everything. Drove beside him and it would top out at 117km/h, geared it down to max out around 80km/h. (probably 99th+ percentile speed wise for anything that starts out as a 50cc)
I rode it a bunch and it was fun in a straight line from a standstill (hard to keep the front down), but I got bored of it fairly quickly.

If I didn't have a class 6 and a couple motorcycles then maybe I'd have had more fun, but as it was it was interesting but not something I'd want to own or ride regularly. For the amount that cost I'd just buy a smaller motorcycle over a scooter. For what he paid for the scooter + parts he could have easily just bought a newer 250 in good shape.

i was looking at the ruckus on cragslist few months ago
modded ones were $6k..you can buy 2 Groms with that money
and i wouldn't be able to cross the 2nd narrows and up the hill

does anyone take their 150cc on highway 1? Can you get a ticket holding a Class 5 but your scooter is technically >50cc?

It's funny because I got a friend that sold his modified Ruckus to buy a Honda Grom. Almost the day after he took delivery of his bike, went out and picked himself up a M696 and posted the Grom up for sale. Apparently it just didn't cut it, he had a misconception about the Grom and was expecting more.

didn't he get to test drive first? or are they just flying off the dealer lots that there's no demo units?

the more i read about it the more i want one as a first bike...i hope PRS gets one this year

I don't think he test drove it first. Dealers require you to have a full Class 6 before allowing you to test ride their bikes. I think he just had his partial license after completion of the MST.

The thing is more of a road legal pit bike, it only has 4 gears. It's something you'll outgrow in a matter of months and inevitably long for something more.

I think if you have a big bike already, a grom would be fantastic fun if you plan to nip out across down. But 3g's is alot for a once and a while ride

I was actually surprised the amount of aftermarket support already available for the Grom. Not my cup of tea but parts are going to be of abundance.

Driven Racing and Yoshimura USA already have a full line of products out for it.

^ Because Italians have managed to convince the rest of the world that anything they make should be more expensive. Just look at their banking system.

In reference to your earlier post: skinnier tires on smaller displacement bikes make more sense due to the their power, acceleration and fuel economy capabilities, whether you think they look stupid or not. I learned to ride on a CBR125R and would recommend the same to anybody.

PS - Don't worry about going off topic. It's your thing and it seems everyone's used to it.

I've had many different sportbikes, etc... but I think you guys are missing the point a bit... I also had a Yamaha BWS for awhile and for me it wasn't about trying to get around Vancouver... it was about riding something that you just had to sit on like a chair and zip about without a clutch or gear changes... didn't have to wrap your legs around it like a bike. It felt like a toy to me and it was a blast. Who cares what other people think? I would quite often go down to the garage and pick the scooter instead of the CBR just because it felt more fun.............. you get on a CBR or anything like that and it just feels so much more serious but if you get on the scooter you can chill and be stupid like spin around in parking lots trying to see how fast and low you can corner but never going fast enough to kill yourself when it goes wrong... lol

You have to look at the scale of production. Japanese manufacturers such as Yamaha for example sold 71,000 something units in North America alone in 2011, where as Ducati had world wide annual sales of 48,000 units just last year.

Ducati is still considered a boutique brand and is a relatively small scale operation when compared to corporate giants such as Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha. The Ducati work shop is probably similar to the one MV Agusta has, something along the size of your local Coscto. Most of the bikes and its components are still built and assembled by hand.

You also have to look at all the different things the Japanese giants manufacture, they're not only doing sport bikes. They have their hands dipped into markets such as ATV's, dirt bikes, power generators, motor operated landscaping equipment, boats, power tools, some even make cars and musical instruments. The Japanese manufacturers global motorcycle sales alone go into the hundreds of thousands and pales in comparison to the numbers of units Ducati can pump out annually.

Ducati employs about a staff of 500, as opposed to the 19,688 employed by Yamaha

Exactly. the ease of scooter operation is the main point of people riding scooter and something people never get. I own a 50cc scooter as well a 750cc. of course the big bike had way more fun on Hwy and when making turn at over 100 km/h. but it cant beat the simplicity of the scooter, just hop on, twist and go. I ride my scooter to from work most of the time during summer and the bike is my only weekend toy.
other thing to consider is the insurance rate. there's a difference on 49cc and the 125. make sure consider that when choosing a bike vs scooter.
