I'm looking for buy a modded Ruckus. For those who owns one, what are the pros and cons.

fun fun fun, summer fun around the city

how modded are you taking it? i rode around on a fully modded ruckus last year, extended, fatty rear tire and with a big motor, speed wise its mucho fun. its about 2inch off the ground and that could be challenging navigating around bumpy roads, being low to the ground will make it tough for other motorist to see you so be careful. best part is.. popo will pull you over and wonder what the heck you are riding... if you get lucky no tix :D.

its fun especially seeing the reaction from people. but riding it for more than 1 hour is pretty :/

some things I can think off off the bat

Pros:
Don't need a class 6. They're good on gas, cheap to insure and I guess they're kinda cute looking.

Cons: (complements of one of my old posts a while back)

Rather dangerous to ride on the road. You can't out accelerate anything, nor can you out brake anything, and it wasn't engineered to handle. You're a bit of a sitting duck in traffic. It doesn't really excel in any particular field.

pros: its cheap

cons: its a scooter.



solution? buy a motorcycle.

beta as hell, but I can however understand if it is someone's only means of affordable transportation.

I had a 2010 Hypermotard evo sp before so I been around the block with bikes in general.

Then just jump the gun! Seems like your mind's already half made, the fact you came from a riding background and are still considering it.

Can't out brake anything? Wtf are you talking about. I owned a very modded one.

Pros
- looks awesome when stretched with a fatty
- cheap on gas and insurance
- compliments everywhere you go
- around a flat place like Richmond is fine
- only need a class 5
- easy and comfy to ride
- a properly tuned 50cc motor had me going 72km/h on flats

Cons
- you'll wish you bought a Honda grom
- too slow, unless it's a GY6
- cops definitely scope out highly modded rucks

If I recall they come with drum brakes from the factory, which was probably not your case. Which also means op will be required to do a disc conversion in the front.

I've seen those discs, it's a single sided 240mm disc. Roughly the size of a typical rear brake on your run of the mill supersport. Again, not sure how great they work, but you'll be able to better gauge for us once you start riding this Summer as you've been on both sides of the fence. Depending on the bike you get, your decision may be swayed then.

I'm used to my brakes taking me from 250 down to 150 after I hit the first brake marker up until I tip in, and I'm not even fully able to exploit my own brakes yet.
With a good set of rubber in the rain you can even make your rear wheel lift off the ground, so I think that's where we may differ in our conception of good stopping power.

Insurance and gas was one of the reasons I got one. For city commute its the cheapest way to go. Fun little thing for sure until you get bored of the speed.

ruckus are slow..get a bws 2 stroke and upgrade to 70cc..

Fair, yes mine had a disc conversion. But since the OP is also talking modded rucks i assume it would have that too. A ruckus weighs substantially less than a sport bike (as one person can pick one up by themselves) and can only go 70km/h. A disc conversion provides tonnes of stopping power, and will out brake a 2,500lb car without question.

I'll give this a go, though it won't be as good as the answer above.

PROS

1) Cheap to maintain
2) Cheap to run (insurance, gas)
3) It's cool; (almost) nobody knocks a Ruckus, particularly a modded one


CONS

1) No storage compartment for helmet
2) Girls don't give a damn
3) Girls don't give a damn
4) Girls don't....oh, I said that


On another note, my brief time on RS has convinced me that Timpo's answer to everything in the universe is "Japan".

But yeah... I totally see how somebody wanting to spend $4k on a Ruckus could totally be cross-shopping the Ruckus against this... :rolleyes:
