Need laptop help

I did a system restore with the option of keeping my files so it would just restore the OS. But now I don't see most of my files but I only have 44 gigs free of a total of 680 gigs about the same as before. Most of my files were in the downloads directory. Were did the files go? They have to be there somewhere right? I'm thing of yanking out the HD and using my HD dock with another comp and trying some recovery software. Any recommendations on software or any other tips?

I think when you do a restore, the old files go under Windows.old in the root of the drive.

I have no window.old. I am trying Recuva software and it seems to find some stuff. I will try some better software after I do another scan.

Have you tried searching for a file you know should be around? The reinstall moves all the old stuff into it's own folder.

I'd try using something like Treesize Free, and it'll give you the size count of your folders. Hopefully, there'll be a monstrous folder in there.
