Craigslist and Fake Tires?

Recently had a blowout on my 350Z pass side rear tire. Been scouring Craigslist and online for replacement for both rear tires. Found this link on Craigslist:

TIRE SALE BRAND

Been texting back and forth, guy claims he can get 245/45/18 Yokohama tires for $70 a piece. I want to believe but I'm finding it rather difficult. Anyone deal with this guy or any input. I'd like to avoid dropping $500 on a set of two tires but I don't want to manage to buy fake tires and risk safety.

Brand new low profile Yokohoma's for 70/pc? Bullshit. Either stolen, counterfeit (if that's even possible...) just generally too good to be true. Run.

Yea I figure they're fake. He says he has to order them in which is mind boggling in itself. Some sort of counterfeit tire ring? Seems about right I guess.

Somehow or another those can't be legally acquired tires.

Something is def not legit in this whole situation.

But are there companies that counterfeit tires? Or is there a way for people to get their hands on batches that fail QC?

I understand that people can acquire tires by other means (stolen cards, or maybe they just fell off the truck) and sell them cheap, but do people really make "fake" tires?

Just because some of you seem to be surprised that there are counterfeit tires..

Chinese companies copy tires, too

Can someone please educate me on counterfeit tires? This is the first time even hearing they exist lol. I'm assuming they are unsafe in comparison to legit ones.

i can't remember which car and driver issue i read but they tested a chinese copy of a yokohama avs and it was total crap. it was an exact copy of the tread pattern, but it had the grip of a square grocery cart wheel...

$70 is really cheap for that tire. I'm always hesitant to buy tires on craigslist because you don't know how long they've been sitting there; most tires start losing grip after 5 years...

In any case, I had a blowout on my car a few years back and ended up buying a replacement from Sorat. They were the cheapest locally and more importantly had stock (it was my daily driver..).

You can tell how old a tire is by looking at the date stamp. That said - you don't know if the tire was sitting outside in the freezing temperature, or in a nice heated garage.

It never ceases to amaze me, when people want to cheap out on important parts for their vehicles. Especially tires. There are other places you can save money. Tires shouldn't be one of them.

That said, no one wants to pay more than they need to.

OP, I did a quick search on tirerack's website, and you can get Yokohama's for $150ish per tire. There are plenty of other name brand tires for less (in the $130 range).

Sure, it's more than the $70, but waay less than the $250 a tire you mentioned.

Ahh...so true. It took years to convince my folks to stop buying crappy tire stuff and get at least a name brand tire.

I'm looking at the General G Max since it is closest to whats on the car now (General Exclaim). I want to keep similar to front tires that are mint and full life. If anyone has a lead on good pricing on these tires let me know. So far my only quote is 499 mounted, balanced, out the door.

There are brake rotors made with mulch in the mix. From China, no less. I wish I could find the story but I can't. It was published within the last 6 months. They were knockoffs. Had to do with Ebay.

It wouldn't surprise me if 'Yokohomo' tires did exist.

Likely not conterfeit tires but a scam. He'll ask you for a deposit to place the order and you'll never hear from him again.

A part of buying expensive tires also comes with tread wear. often they advertise more grip, which in turn means less tread life due to tire compound. Dont assume expensive means long lasting as this does not always fly with tires. Just to reiterate on buying 'cheap tires'

So you'd rather buy shit tires that don't stop or turn as well because you want to save a bit by not replacing them as often?

for a lot of people, that's how it is. Not everyone drives balls to walls fast. 90% of people are conservative drivers

You don't need to be driving fast to need to stop or turn suddenly due to the actions of someone/thing else.
