So will amazon.ca prime members get access? One thing I was worried about with them signing netflix is that they'll only be available to watch in US or something dumb like that.

Still happy they're set on starting something tho. Very excited!

This was just released:

Quote:
Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have a new show. The Guardian and other news outlets are reporting that former "Top Gear" hosts have signed a deal with Amazon to create a program for Amazon Prime.
According to the FT, sources say the former "Top Gear" hosts' deal with Amazon is worth a reported $250 million for three years and 36 episodes.
"The trio’s new show will be broadcast on Amazon’s on-demand TV service, with the US giant beating off competition from ITV and its online rival, Netflix," the Guardian reported, along with this typically edgy and amusing quote from Clarkson: “I feel like I’ve climbed out of a biplane and into a spaceship.”
The Amazon announcement comes as a bit of surprise, as the odd-on favorite to garner the talents of the "Top Gear" triumverate was Netflix. But regardless, Clarkson, Hammond, and May have left the familiar realms of broadcast TV behind and joined the brave new world of content creation.
The team's lengthy and wildly successful run on the BBC came to an end earlier this year when Clarkson, no stranger to controversy, was fired after striking a "Top Gear" producer is a dispute over dinner after a day of filming.
A protracted public debate over whether the BBC should part ways with Clarkson followed, concluding with the network declining to renew his contract. Hammond and May then joined Clarkson in a period of, as it turns out, brief unemployment.
"Top Gear" was a cash cow for the BBC, and it isn't going away. A new host, Chris Evans, was signed to replace Clarkson.

From a business perspective, both the Amazon deal and the Netflix discussion are interesting because they signal the arrival of a new dynamic in creating and distributing entertainment online. Each internet giant has seen how popular "Top Gear" is with its audience, and using data on the behavior of viewers, can position itself to make much stronger wagers on what types of new programming will be successful.
No word yet on what the new show will be called.

36 episodes is surprising to me. I wonder what the format will be?

I see it being something like:

* Intro with witty comments
* Legit car review
* Interview / Celeb in a reasonably priced car
* Entertainment film / Not legit car review
* Ending comments

12 episodes a year is roughly the same as the smallest seasons on the BBC but that's a good thing. They can put more effort into the good ideas and not have to do any filler shit.

^ depends if it's still done series style, or if they'll change to seasons. Personally I prefer the burst of TG twice a year.

Yes, I also like having 6 episodes twice a year. All at the same time just leaves a 9 month gap between episodes.

If they released it Netflix style, I'd watch it all in 12 hours and then spend the next 11 months, 29 days wondering when Top Gear is back.

hmm, top gear will definitely keep the same format like what you said. which means they likely cannot do the exact format.

Yeah, chances are the trio will try a different format. The Top Gear style is obviously a tried and tested format, but I have a feeling it might have been part of what was starting to make it feel old and tired. Don't get me wrong, I loved it right up to the end but part of me always wondered how the show would feel if they changed things up and switched things around. The general consensus is that Top Gear was at it's best when they were either doing a legit car review or one of their episode long challenges/road trips. TG:USA definitely got better when they switched to full feature challenges and dropped the clone attempt. I'd like to see something different come from Andy and co.

Oh, and drop the caricature act. Clarkson isn't mechanically inept, nor is he actually a giant hater of bikes, May can keep the pedantic persona but drop the jokes about him getting lost, and Hammond... now that I think about it, it feels that Hammond is actually probably the most genuine of the three. I just want to see three people who are obviously great friends have lots of fun while driving awesome (and cheap/shitty) cars.

I don't see that as fake, really. Exaggerations but not fake. Isn't that totally how guys are friends though? Talk shit and joke at each other? They don't make any secret of their friendship. Clarkson says things like "It's under 100 degrees, we're in the South, I'm with me mates...it's a good day" or something like that when they were doing the US cheap car special.

I don't want them to change too much. The news is actually my favorite part of the show. Just the three hosts fucking around most of the time.

Hoping for more cheap car challenges. The last few seasons kind of strayed away from this a bit.

I like Jensen Button as a driver, but he's just a mediocre driver and I don't see McLaren/Honda miraculously coming up with a dominating car in the foreseeable future.

I think he's way better than a "mediocre driver". He held his own against Hamilton and pretty much took over the team. The thing with Button is that he needs a car to his liking and he can't drive a shitty car fast, while Hamilton and Alonso can.

He's also holding his own against Alonso, although in a shitty car

Holy Freaking Crap: The Top Gear Guys' New Amazon Show Is Doing The LaFerrari, Porsche 918 And McLaren P1 Test

"The new car show on Amazon starring Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond, just began its full day of shooting, and it’s looking to be a modest affair. There appears to be just barely over 50 people participating. Oh, and also a Ferrari LaFerrari, a McLaren P1, and a Porsche 918.

Already, it’s headed where Top Gear only dreamed of going. A shootout between all three hypercars was supposedly in the works, courtesy of a wealthy benefactor, before the show was unceremoniously transformed in the wake of Clarkson punching a crew member in the face. Said wealthy benefactor may have followed the trio, or they may have finally managed to snag all three from their respective managers.

Either way, with this kind of budget, this kind of crew, and this kind of creative team, it’s almost certainly going to be awesome.

No word, however, on whether or not the crew donned any protective facial gear immediately after this photo was taken."
