Red Bull plans to use their own F1 V6 Engines

RBR Changing engines mid-season

Quote:
The new power unit, said to be based on the Cosworth engine which was built and ready to run but no customers wanting to buy it. As result the project was shelved until Red Bull came knocking. After a short period of negotiations a deal was struck and the entire Cosworth F1 turbo project was airlifted to Milton Keynes and Cosworth agreeing to a no disclosure clause in the lock, stock and barrel buy out.

Since late February, when the deal was struck, Red Bull engineers in conjunction with Infiniti [Nissan] engineers have secretly put the final touches to the power unit which has been designated ‘Red Bull Wings DM-1′ – DM initials in honour of Dietrich Mateschitz.

A source close to the project revealed, “Red Bull have toyed with the idea of their own engine for some time now, even before the Renault crisis – where they were made to look like fools – and in the end was the catalyst for the decision to launch the project.”

Ya the Redbull empire is HUGE. It's the 2nd most valuable drink brand after coca cola. The original thai founder with his 2% in the company is already loaded through the roof.

because 1 can of red bull is 1/3rd smaller than coke/pepsi (8oz vs 12oz) but 2x+ the price and they sold over 5billion cans of it + its privately owned (no shareholder handouts/ordering around) and they only employ 8300 ppl whereas someone like Coke employs 150,000ppl etc etc so they probably have more of a marketing budget to their 1 product vs 100+ (percentage wise anyway)

and it's much cheaper to sponsor racing events and extreme sports than putting commercials on tv.

^ that is not true CharlieH. Red Bull is a company that understands how to geninuely appeal to millennials. Red Bull do have TV ads & Magagazines that focus on the Red Bull lifestyle. Rarely do they ever talk about Red Bull the energy drink anymore. Red Bull have an internal mandate to reinvest at least 50% of their revenue back into sponsorships.

I view Red Bull like Apple, they just are a little kooler and edgier than their competitors (Monster and Microsoft)

Alos, margins are insane for Red Bull. Private companies can get away with a very much different investment model vs public companies. Private companies can focus their investments for long term gain. Public companies have to deal with hitting quarterly targets and all the noise from investment speculators. Hence in publuc companies you make dumb short term decisions to maximize the short term bonus structures.
