Hundreds Missing After Ferry Sinks off South Korea's Coast

Quote:
Hundreds of people are missing and at least two are confirmed dead after a ferry carrying 477 passengers, many of them students, sank in cold waters off South Korea’s southern coast Wednesday.

There were fears of a big jump in the number of deaths, as dozens of boats, helicopters and divers scrambled to rescue passengers who had been on the ferry travelling to the southern island of Jeju. One rescued passenger said he believed that many people had been trapped inside the ferry when it sank.

The confirmed fatalities are a female crew member, 22, and a male student.

The ferry, identified as the Sewol, was sailing to the southern island of Jeju when it sent a distress call as it began leaning to one side.

Passenger Kim Seong-mok, speaking from a nearby island after his rescue, told YTN that he was "certain" that many people were trapped inside the ship as water quickly filled up inside and the severe tilt of the ferry kept them from reaching the exits. Some people yelled at those who couldn't get out, urging them to break windows.

Kim said that after having breakfast he felt the ferry tilt and then heard it crash into something. He said the ferry operator made an announcement asking that passengers wait and not move from their places. Kim said he didn't hear any announcement telling passengers to escape.

Coast Guard crews tried to break into the ferry, searching for anyone left behind, but they have been unable to do so since the vessel has sunk more than 100 feet below the water's surface.

Sounds like it could be bad. Majority of the people on board were students from a high school that were on a field trip.

It's unbelievable to me how many people are still unaccounted for.

SBS News is now reporting (19:23 KST):

heartbreaking. i can't imagine texting my parents that i loved them before knowing my inevitable fate.

this situation eerily reminds me of the titanic (which i actually rewatched a few months ago). crew told everyone to stay in their seats and relax when the boat was gravely in danger and sinking.

Imagine being a parent of one of the kids stuck in there. Some of the kids are texting and making calls to family and friends, but they can't survive for much longer.

It would be my worst nightmare as a parent knowing my child in such a predicament and I can't do jack shit.

Two of my biggest fears, being trapped in a sinking ship, or being burned alive.

Several sailors lived in the hull of one of the sunken ships at Pearl Harbour for up to 2 weeks, in the pitch black, until they died

I saw the interviewed say to the reporters that the crew told them to stay on board and wait for instructions during the ordeal. I just face palmed and changed the channel.

What ever happened to the noble act of a captain going down with his ship, or at the very least, remaining onboard untill all passengers and crew are away to safety? Seemingly captains and crew are abandoning ship prematurely with increasing frequency with the Costa Concordia being the most prominent incident of recent memory. Has the nobility, stature, clout, etc of being a ship's officer diminished due to an lack of appreciation and understanding of the job itself? Do they believe ships owners only see their role and their life as a dollar sign where the bottom line is paramount? Do these officers then start looking out for themselves and the ship rather than those people in their care or is there some other factor?

I hope their are some definitive answers for the families of those lost.

The value of life and dignity has severely dropped in general

When I first got into the adult business I was totally ashamed that I had to sell porn for a living. What changed my mind, for awhile, was how everyone I told about it just high-fived me and thought I was sooooooo cool for being what amounts to a digital pimp.

Article: Captain "I'm so sorry to the family of passengers, I am too embarrassed"

Source: Yonhap News via Naver

1. [+3,337, -55] So did you manage to dry up your money?

2. [+3,016, -34] What crime did the 22 year old stewardess commit to suffer her fate while the captain was busy running away... A young woman, just four years older than the students on board with her. When asked by a student, "Unni, aren't you going to wear a life vest?" she had told them, "I'll get off when you guys all have life vests on and leave the ferry"... She's a hero who completed her job until the end, a hero whose death we had to hear on the news. My heart... Please give him the fullest of legal consequences... So that he lives his life knowing the crime he has committed. You are a criminal..

3. [+2,139, -91] ㅋㅋㅋ 69 year old captain, just admit that you wanted to live a long life.. You're sorry? If you're sorry, you should've saved at least one more life.. And why did you not report the accident earlier?

4. [+1,450, -34] He's over 60 years old and was caught drying out a $50 dollar bill at the hospital while young students are losing their lives. I'd kill him with a stone if I could.

5. [+893, -15] You are only human so you were probably scared as well, but shouldn't you have broadcast something before leaving the ferry? The children on board stayed where they were, believing your words... I am so angry!!!

Source:Sewol ferry tragedy halts everything + real heroes emerge/fuck the captain + ways to help? | Asian Junkie

Quote:
As you’ve probably heard by now, there was a tragedy in South Korea recently that involved a ferry named Sewol and the 475 people on-board, who were mostly schoolchildren on their way to a field trip. The image above details most of what people think happened, though nothing conclusive on what actually caused the ferry to sink, and now the focus has shifted to rescue and recovery.
This is a gigantic deal in Korea, as it should be, but besides the brutally sad stories of kids texting their relatives from the sinking ship, there werealso heroes to be found who deserve to be highlighted.
Quote:
Ms Park Ji Young, a 22-year-old crew member of the ferry Sewol, was among them. She lost her life while struggling to ensure that all passengers on the third and fourth floors of the vessel wore life jackets and found their way out.
“I repeatedly asked her why she did not first wear a life jacket. Park just said that she would get out of the ship after making sure that all passengers were out. She said the crew including her would be the last (to escape),” a survivor told the media.
“Park pushed shocked passengers toward the exit even when the water was up to her chest.”
Mr Kim Jong Hwang, a 58-year-old survivor, also remembered Ms Park’s evacuation efforts.
“When the ship turned upside down, passengers were put on a door with one of them falling through it. Park dragged the passenger out of it and pushed others out of their quarters,” he said.
Mr Jeong Cha Woong, a 17-year-old student, is also being hailed as a hero. He died after helping his friends escape from the ship. Mr Jeong is known to have died after giving his own life vest to his drowning friend and hurled himself into the waters to rescue others.
Mr Kim Hong Gyeong, a 59-year-old survivor, also risked his life to save other people.
Mr Kim made a 10m-long rope with curtains of the ship and used it to drag up several passengers. Although the water was above his knees, he continued his rescue efforts and saved the lives of some 20 people. He, then, boarded a fishing boat that volunteered in the rescue operations.
Of course, there’s also always villains, and I can’t honestly figure out a way to describe the ship captain as anything but the fucking worst.

Quote:
The captain of the Sewol ship, Lee Joonseok (aged 60), reportedly told all passengers to remain where they were and did not notify them to escape or put on life jackets while the ship had been capsizing.
Furthermore, a picture of the captain escaping from the capsizing ship first had been revealed, angering many viewers and especially the families of the victims.
According to the Korean Seafarers Act, Article 10, “A captain shall not leave his/her ship from the time cargoes are loaded and passengers start to go on board until the time all cargoes are unloaded from his/her ship and all passengers leave his/her ship: Provided, That except for cases where there is a special reason that he/she should not leave his/her ship, such as abnormal weather conditions, etc., this shall not apply to cases where he/she has appointed a person who is to perform his/her duties on his/her behalf from among officers.”
The captain of this ship, however, was one of the first to escape from the ship without having notified his passengers of the situation, or having told them to escape to safety
There were also reports of him in the hospital drying out a $50 bill, but I’m not sure about the legitimacy of that, and quite frankly there doesn’t need to be any more confirmation that he’s tremendous piece of shit.
Seriously, legit mad in real life when I heard that detail come out. Sickening.

I can't, for the life of me, decide who is the bigger piece of shit: this guy, or the Captain of the Costa Concordia that went down in a similar fashion. How cowardly.
