Ferrari California and Maser GT caught on Sea to Sky

As many already might know, these two got caught after being called in. The article is a funny read though..

Luxury vehicles impounded for Sea-to-Sky Hwy. race | CTV Vancouver News

Quote:
Mounties have impounded two new luxury vehicles for racing at twice the legal speed limit on the Sea-to-Sky Highway near Squamish, B.C.
A concerned driver called Squamish RCMP around 11 a.m. Monday after reporting seeing the high-end cars “blowing by.”

Cpl. Robert McDonald said a 2014 grey Maserati and a 2012 black Ferrari were spotted speeding and following each other closely northbound on Highway 99.

McDonald said the drivers, both repeat offenders, were warming up their tires in preparation for racing by weaving in and out of the fast lane.

“It was like they were on a racetrack,” he told CTV News. “It’s just like how racers zigzag on the track to lubricate the tires to give them more traction for racing.”

Traffic services say the luxury sports cars were clocked going 140 kilometres an hour in a 70 zone.

Both drivers slammed on their brakes and slowed to 80 kilometres an hour after being spotted by Mounties, McDonald said.

The male drivers, both in their mid-20s, were ticketed for excessive speeding, which is punishable by a fine of up to $500. Both cars were impounded for 15 days.

McDonald says the punishments don’t reflect their previous history of driving infractions.

“Unfortunately there’s no escalation on that scale of fines,” he said.
McDonald said RCMP will continue to impound vehicles when drivers are caught speeding.

“Speeding anywhere is dangerous, especially that kind of speed. It won’t be tolerated,” he said.

Auto publication Motortrend says a 2014 Maserati retails for between $102,000 and $140,000 and a 2012 Ferrari can sell for up to $257,000.

I just don't get this whole "speeding is dangerous" thing. I mean I get it, but still, there are way too many controversy about this.

Speed limit is just a random number government came up.
70km/h is safe to drive, but not 140km/h.
If they set the speed limit at 40km/h, then suddenly 70km/h would be unacceptable and won't be tolerated.

If 140km/h was a speed limit, suddenly it becomes a "safe speed".

And yes, in case you missed, I said it is a random number.

If you actually know the physics, the slower you go, the less chance of killing driver/passenger/pedestrian in the even of an accident.
This is what speed limit is supposed to be for.

So the question is, at what speed would you get hit by a car and still survive?
I would say 10km/h or 15km/h, even at that speed, there are risks of getting seriously injured by get hit by a 3,000lbs of chunk of metal.

Maybe there might be some element of speed limit, like at what speed your car/motorcycle won't slip off the road while cornering etc...but that really depends on the car/motocycle.

I think most cops nowadays use lazer, which makes radar detector obsolete.

You can get a lazer shifter, but I heard that they're illegal and you could get a criminal charge for obstruction of justice.

They were called in. No Detector/Jammer would save you.
Ferrari/Maserati. Hard to miss.

And even if they didn't get the description of the cars, RCMP would've sent in a chopper.

This is why most drivers on the S2S pass people at reasonable speed. Blatant speeding will make you stick out to "concerned drivers" with nothing better to do. Like paying attention to the road, driving, bodily functions, and keeping thier mouth shut.

Speed limits are a weighted average between risk, probabilities, and physics.

The speed limits you see on the roads today are not just some "arbitrary number" they WERE developed by engineers. The problem is that the speed limits were never revised, even after the government spent billions making roads safer, expanding highways, straightening roads, etc.

So now we have cars which are infinitely more capable then the heaps of shit we were driving even just 10 years ago, and the roads are far better designed, and yet the speed limits were never changed to reflect these improvements. This is where the system fell apart, the S2S is a very clear example of this failure by the government.

The road was drastically improved in every way, and yet the speed limit was never increased. It remained the same 80km/h it was 10+ years ago. This happened even though the engineering report and design on the highway was done in such a manner that the road was supposed to have a 100km/h speed limit. (For those that don't know, the original RFQ which went out when the S2S highway was first in the planning stages, stated that the design of the highway would have to meet or exceed that 100km/h design limit).

But none of this is neither here nor there, these individuals broke the law, and had to face the consequences. They knew what the limit was and they willingly exceeded it. There is no basis for complaint.

You cannot simply disregard laws because you feel they are incorrect or unfair. What you can do is go lobby your government to change the laws or participate in discussions that happen constantly in local councils about speed limits.

The two young men and this incident is the exact reason so many people are hesitant to raise the speed limits, because they feel this is the type of behaviour which will be a result of it. Which is simply not the case, SpeedSense and other speed limit change advocacy groups do not condone breaking the law, they are simply calling for a revision of our speed limits, until such a time they maintain that you should follow the posted limits.

The funny thing is that this only works with slicks. You don't swerve like that with radial tires to heat them up. It's like doing a burnout on street tires. All you're doing is burning off rubber.

So either the journalist is an idiot for writing that, or the drivers were idiots for trying to heat up radial street tires.

I would say the speed limit haven't been revised in several decades.
Cars do not take 200-250ft to stop from 60mph anymore. Suspension/tires/brakes have improved dramatically.

The highway speed limit should be 110-120km/h, not 70 or 80. Someone even posted about this video on "Speed Kills" controversy.

Let's face it, I see people driving at about 140km/h on the highway all the time.
Not only Ferrari, Maserati or any other Italian Exotics.

I don't even know why this was on the news, clearly everybody knows there are bunch of people who drive 140km/h on the highway. I'm not saying this would make it okay, but it makes me wonder why nobody has said anything about how people with average cars do the same thing all the time. Don't just pick on rich guys.
They didn't mention anything about other people driving that fast on the road.

Also if you look at the statistics, you are more likely get killed if you text or DUI.
Now that's a different story but my point is they would deserve a speeding ticket but I don't know if speed limit was right at today's standard where people are driving much faster with much improved cars + road.

I used to agree with you, but age and experience have shown me that they choose the limits based on the lowest common denominator.
  • Like the dumbass doing 45kmh on a scooter the other day, blocking the left lane like she was a dump truck.
  • Or the elderly gal who would brake severely the moment her car went over 60kmh. Give her some space.
  • Or the new driver who pulls out in front of you without thinking.

It's bad enough driving in the lower mainland without giving those in a rush the "right" to go double the speed that many are comfortable driving at.

That said, 50kmh on Marine is totally unrealistic, while 50kmh on the Golden Ears way is a cash grab.

However dropping the limit to 50kmh on the hwy 17 under the Patullo is for safety. The number of zonked out crackeads crossing that road to sell their scrap is unbelievable. Raise it to 80 like the rest of hwy 17, and you'll have a lot of dead crackheads to clean up. Same goes for the DTES with it's 30kmh limit.

funny thing is i love how sea to sky remains the same speed limit after the construction. The road is more than capable of handling...80km. I was there last year to do a job in squamish, ppl in their trucks and cargo vans are flying by 110-120km with ease.

Same thing with hwy 1, that bby stretch not a single soul is doing 80km, everyone is doind 110-120km and that is the flow of the traffic.

Yet modded cars and exotic gets poked in the ass when they do 120-140, the media portraits them like they are doing 200km.

dont get me started on marine drive, 3 fucking lanes each side and speed limit is 50km? who the fuck are u gonna hit? the curb and trees?

Part of the reason why speed limits haven't increased in 30 years is because lots of people still drive cars that are 30 years old and haven't had proper maintenance since Clinton. Sure the cars have gotten better since then, but as long as people are as dumb as they are the speed limits will have to be catered to the LCD.
