2 dead 4 injured Nanaimo mill

NANAIMO (NEWS1130) - The company that owns a lumber mill on Vancouver Island where two people were shot to death and two were injured says a suspect arrested by police was a former employee of the mill.

The shooting happened at about 7 a.m. at a Western Forest Products sawmill in Nanaimo, north of Victoria.

The RCMP say officers arrested a 47-year-old resident of Nanaimo shortly after arriving at the scene.

Western Forest Products president Don Demens says the suspect is a former employee, but the man’s name hasn’t been publicly released.

Supt. Mark Fisher of the RCMP says officers seized a shotgun at the scene.

The RCMP have not speculated on what may have motivated the attack, but Fisher says investigators believe the shooter worked alone.

With the huge amount of layoffs the mill has seen over the years this doesn't surprise me unfortunately. Life is getting more and more expensive, and 95% of us are getting paid less and less. I hope the severely injured makes it through ok.

This had me worried all day, as my brother is a traveling millwright out of Nanaimo. Found out tonight he was working in Grande Prairie. My condolences to the families

I work at Nanaimo General Hospital, so we found out pretty quickly what had happened.

Feel really bad for the friends and families of the victims.
