Hit and run... got his license plate. Will i have to pay anything?

I was parked outside a restaurant and was on the phone. A car parked next to mine, the driver then opened his door and it hit my car hard enough that my whole car shook.

I was still inside the car but had an important call so i couldnt just walk out and assess the damage (i was praying it'd be nothing). I watched him walk out, looked at me, then walked a circle around the lot then got back inside his car and drove off.

After my call i got out of my car to check and lo and behold... Paint scratched in a vertical line on the right on my car's door.

I memorized his license plate number... Will call icbc to dial a claim.

Is there any way this phaggot will get away with it??

possibly, if there's still paint on the dude's car, that could match up. Or enough of a paint transfer.
Then again, dude might try and buff it out quickly when he gets a call from icbc.

I'm not judging you or anything but I think about 99.9% of people would understand if you said you had to call them back in such a situation...

edit: I assume you took as many pictures as possible of your car? Would've obviously been better if you got "scene" pictures but make do with what you get. No witnesses?

The dude can get away with it if his door doesnt have my paint on it?? Wow....gay as hell

This... "someone just hit my car, i'm very sorry but i'll have to call you back as soon as we exchange insurance information"

99.9% of people would have no problem with it, and that 0.01% that did, well fuck them.

With that said, Shoulda', woulda', coulda', right? Good luck dude. Hopefully the other guy does the right thing (doubtful).

I'm not gonna lie, unless you have video evidence this is not worth your time
Its unfortunate that there are morons like this around that don't respect other people's shit, but unless you're willing to park farther away then you'll have to deal with it

How dumb are you that someone hit your car and you didn't get out and deal with it?

Thats like getting rear ended when you are late and just memorizing the persons plate and driving away instead of dealing with it...

EDIT: Oh sorry I missed you were on the phone. I guess in that situation I wouldn't know what to do either, I mean I have never been on the phone with the president.

Happened to my wife and ICBC had both parties come to see if they could line up the damage. Within a few minutes the adjuster told my wife that she could leave b/c everything lined up.
Important thing is to emphasize that you were in the car when he hit your car with door.

Wow, you are naive aren't you?

and seriously, I'd walk out and deal with the situation immediately if I witness such a thing.

This one time I was driving my s13 and i'm pretty sure I got rear ended, came to a stop and felt like I got hit from behind. Looked back and saw a car that was close, I just drove away since the car's gonna end up in a wall at some point haha. I attributed it to my dif being gay and don't weird things, there wasn't any damage on my car so who knows...

I agree with every1 in this thread that i shuda got out of the car right away, but in my mind i was hoping it was nothing but... Paint scratched in the end

Called icbc they said they'd do an investigation

The dude was with his wife and little girl... In my mind i was too obsessed with my call and kinda didnt wanna cause a scene so i was giving him the benefit of the doubt that there wouldnt be any damages...

1 costly mistake sigh...

Icbc is a piece of shit company, but they ARE professionals. Let them deal with it and see how it goes. Pretty much out of your hands now

Here's what was likely going through the other guy's head:

"Damn! First my daughter vomits on my brand new OEM floor mats, then my wife grills me for feeding her durian ice-cream for lunch, and now I've dented/scratched some poor fool's car.....

Oh well...time to get out and deal with this.

Why is he just sitting there on his phone looking back at me? Doesn't he realize / care that I just scratched up his car?

I suppose I'll assess the damage.

Why is he still not getting out of his car?

Oh well, I've done my best. If he doesn't care, I'm not sticking around to give my money to someone who doesn't want it. After all, I've got some carpets to clean.

Good God, I'll never get this smell out..."

This has been my experience.

ICBC will match the plate up and send the registered owner a letter stating that someone reported an accident(or whatever) and their plate was named. They are instructed to call for a statement. It becomes your word against his after each of you have produced a statement. ICBC will determine fault based on the statements and the damage.

My opinion based on some experience:
ICBC(like all insurance companies) just needs someone to pay so whoever has the most believable story or if the damage is clearly visible on both parties vehicles then you will not be at fault and not have to pay a deductible. The other guy will be faced with a possible premium increase. He can choose to pay the damage back in full to avoid a premium increase. If the guy never calls ICBC they may just call it single car incident and you'll be responsible for your deductible and may or may not be at risk for a premium increase depending on if they call it a comprehensive or collision claim. In which case you can pay back the damage bill to avoid a premium increase or just not proceed with the claim and fix yourself.

Pretty hard for them to say he hit your car based on the damage and why would you lie and be able to match his physical identity(I assume you saw him?) with his plate right? Well, if he can mask the damage somehow and prove he was never there then maybe he gets off and you're back to a single vehicle incident. Seems unlikely but you never know.

As for not getting out right away to deal with the situation, well, not sure how ICBC will view that part of the story. Just sounds like a weird thing to do and they might find it suspicious.

I think op was too intimidated to confront the dude, it's okay maybe he could have shanked you? no ones judging... but the "too important of a phone call" story is super weak
