You can get "life" in prison but you're eligible for parole after 25 years so technically it's not a life sentence because you have a chance to be free.

I wish they would have killed this guy. He's ruined three families in a day for no apparent reason. One of the officers had a young son and was expecting another child. Really sad.

I have immense respect for the officers that arrested him, I can't imagine the amount of restraint required to not shoot that fuckhead.

We have to support this piece of shit while he rots in prison.
A $0.25 bullet would have saved tax payers a whole lot of money (lawyers, court fees, keeping him in prision).
In clear cut cases like this, I support the death penalty.

^ it's actually more than just .25cents for the death penalty. The paperwork and etc amounts to quite a large amount. I'll find out which source I found tomorrow (looked up the death penalty vs life in prison), way too tired today.
Edit: nvm I found something http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/costs-death-penalty. The stats are for the states since Canada has abolished capital punishment for quite some time to be relevant

The system makes money off cheap prisoner labour... unless the prisoner decides to stay locked in his/her cell all day which I doubt humans will, because that will make one crazy if not crazier.
To crunch some numbers, a welfare recipient gets what $250 a month for food? Thats $3000 a year.
A percentage of that figure gets divided up by stores who need to make profits selling their products and a further cut the government takes in on every item for tax.
So somewhere around $2000 or much less for the whole sale food the prison system buys and feeds the inmates.
Does feeding, heat and a handful of guards cost that much per person? No.
If I can own a slave for $5000 a year, I can probably overturn his labour to make me $40-60 thousand.

^^ Only $5k a year per inmate? Are you out of your mind? If you are gonna bs, at least do some homework first, you know?
This article from Nov 2013: Canada?s prison population at all-time high - CBC News - Latest Canada, World, Entertainment and Business News
pegs a male prisoner to cost an average of $110k/year, while a female inmate costs a little less than $55k.
Dammit it, man. I don't even make $55k a year, and I work my a$$ off at the office...

Edit: nvm I found something Costs of the Death Penalty | Death Penalty Information Center. The stats are for the states since Canada has abolished capital punishment for quite some time to be relevant | I didn't say $0.25 for the death penalty, I said $0.25 for the bullet so we don't have to deal with the guy for the next 50+ years.

These figures are bullshit.

These figures are bullshit. | CiC, don't play dumb with me now. Certainly you can fathom a reasonable guess as to why it costs that much to house an inmate?
It doesn't specifically say in the article how the $110k / $55k figures are calculated, but it does hint at a lot of reasons for those costs.
From the stuff that I've read in the past, typically these calculations are arrived at by tallying the total operating costs of the correctional facilities, and dividing it out by the number of inmates. This means the building costs, maintenance and prison operating costs, the costs of correctional officers, medical staff, general staff costs to keep the whole place and the whole system running, training / re-integration programs for the inmates, etc. etc.
Prisons / correctional facilities are anything but cheap.

Justin Bourque pleads guilty. Quote: MONCTON, NB (NEWS1130) – A New Brunswick man has pleaded guilty to three first-degree murder charges in the fatal shootings of three RCMP officers in Moncton.
Justin Bourque also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in the Court of Queen’s Bench today.
The 24-year-old calmly told the judge “I plead guilty” or replied “guilty” when asked for his plea on each charge.
His case returns to court Oct. 27 to file victim impact statements and pre-sentencing documents.
Bourque was recently found competent and mentally fit to stand trial after undergoing a psychiatric assessment. Members of his family declined comment as they left court.
Supt. Marlene Snowman, the RCMP’s top officer in the detachment responsible for Moncton, also refused comment after the pleas were entered.
Constables Dave Ross, Fabrice Gevaudan and Douglas Larche were killed after responding to a report of a man with firearms in a residential neighbourhood in the northwest area of Moncton on June 4.
Constables Eric Dubois and Darlene Goguen were wounded and later released from hospital.
Bourque was arrested following a manhunt that spanned 30 hours and brought the city of 69,000 to a virtual standstill.

I wonder how much of a difference his sentencing will be by pleading guilty. The only major benefit I see with the guilty plead is that our court system will end up spending less time (and therefore spending less money) than if he had tried to fight something off.

Unreal. Not very often do they catch the guy before they kills themselves, cops not kill them, and then the guy be mentally competent and fit to stand trial, and then plead guilty!
