| Amazon Fire TV
Anyone got one? It's only $99, thinking of getting one just to play around with it. Most are saying that it's the best streaming box on the market, best UI with tons of support.
Does it run on Android? can it be rooted? sideload apps?

If I get Chromecast, I don't intend to pay for any paid-subscriptions. Amazon Fire TV can be sideloaded with Android apps, which extends it's usefulness far more than ChromeCast, unless I am proven otherwise. Not to mention, it's a quadcore with a fast cpu, 2gb ram, it's a beast that can hold it's own for a few years down the road. ChromeCast, on the other hand, is a novelty item. AFT seems like it can do everything a ChromeCast can do, plus so much more for only $50 more.

What kind of Android apps are you planning to sideload?
I don't pay for any paid subscriptions as well. Youtube = free
Also found this app called TV Portal which lets me stream new tv shows/movies (not old crap on Canadian netflix) with Chromecast

Some Chinese TV apps for the fam, and maybe XBMC.
I don't care for watching 5 min clips on the big screen, so it isn't useful for me in that regard. How's TV Portal? new shows? legit?

Streaming is lag free on my ASUS n66u router.

You might want to consider the MiniX
Basically, its a high end android tablet connected to your TV with built in XBMC.
Works well with 4K TVs, runs KitKat so any android app will run on it. Will prolly be a little overkill for simply "playing around with" but it can function like a very good HTPC to stream all your UDH/FHD vids from your pc/nas. MINIX NEO X8-H - MINIX |
