Misrepresentation

Scenario:

Ted works at a company called "computers".

The owner of the company has friends in other companies that do similar buisness.

Ted applies at a different company that offers a higher wage, one that he somewhat deals with on a daily basis, and knows the owners as well, but both owners knowing each other also.

The company ted applied for, talks to the company he currently works for and the boss says things such as "Ted can barely keep up, he has a hard time" etc etc. When in reality it's far from the truth. The owner of "computers" knows he's an extremely hard worker and would take a huge loss with him leaving.

Ted doesn't get the job at the other company because of what his boss said.

What happens in those kinds of scenarios?

Sweet fuck all?

The problem with working in a tight knitted industry, everybody knows everybody. If you're good at what you do it can really work to your favor but it makes kicking tires well still employed kind of tough. The industry I work in is the same way, if I started putting out resumes my boss would hear about it.

if you have proof, i would confront your boss about it *respectfully*. if this move kept you from earning an appropraite wage or possible promotion, talk to him about it. clearly you are good enough to keep to warrant sabotaging interviews. i think that means youre worth a wage increase

I believe the correct term is defamation, not misrepresentation. and there probably isn't much Ted can do about it unless he can prove it in court?

Did Ted ask for a raise before looking for other work? If he asked for one and didn't get it did he let his boss know he might have to look for other opportunities?

Sounds like he's in a small enough world where just manning up and asking for shit might work. But that ship has probably sailed.
