Han wouldn't be dead, and he's on an undercover mission add to that, the head of Lucas Films said the whole cast will be back for the next Episode, though she may have simply not wanted to spoil anything when she said that....
but when all's said and done i doubt it, but we'll see
words cannot describe my disappointment when that guy took off his mask....
I think that's exactly how you're supposed to feel, and I'm quite confident it was deliberate from the casting/directing side.

When you see Kylo for the very first time, it seems like he's already an established Sith, a real, unwavering bad ass. As the movie progresses, you start seeing chinks in his armor and by the time you see him take off his mask, he's essentially fully exposed. You find that he's nothing but a spoiled, bratty, vulnerable nerd. I think the way they developed his character was amazing.
Being Force attuned is not a requirement to use a sabre. Case in point is Grievous and his quad-wielding. Having the Force though greatly enhances your ability with the sabre (deflecting blaster fire, Force throw/retrieve etc.) Having weapons training is sufficient to fight with a sabre as evidenced by Finn though he got whooped by both the trooper and Kylo. How Rey was able to hold her own and beat Kylo we will have to wait and see in the next episode.

I thought Grievous was a Sith apprentice (count dooku's) with a mostly robotic body and his fleshy parts were loaded with "midichlorians"

I dont' know..lol, I got a cringy feeling when he took off his mask.
I was expecting someone better looking like the guy who played anakin in the earlier starwars, or someone that looks tougher like ronan in guardians of the galaxy
He looks so "average" (mole, asymmetric face)...and his facial expression seems so "clueless"...not what I'd expect for a badass villian.
(The first half of the movie kinda makes him out to be some super strong, badass rutless sith lord, stopping lasers and killing villagers)
And his character just keeps getting more disappointing when a janitor stormtropper manage to wound him in a lightsaber duel, and he lost to some untrained girl using the lightsaber for the first time.

IMO I think JJ/Disney intended his character to be like that - first impression he's badass, he's a tough Mofo. But he's a developing character. He's not a fully trained Sith. He doesn't have the Darth title. Snoke says bring him to me at the end to complete his training. We will see a completely diff Kylo from ep 7 to 9. Same goes for Rey - we don't really know her backstory. She has Force ability obviously and perhaps previous training which hopefully we will get more clues later on. IMO I thought Adam Driver did a great job and the Kylo Ren character is very intriguing- there's so many possibilities.

Like others have said, I think that's an intentional casting and plot decision. All too often big bad guys are portrayed through actors like Jason Stathom (who, admittedly, does have that tough guy look nailed) or through people like Javier Bardem (Skyfall) by having that charismatic, yet slightly crazy aura. It's not often the bad guy turns out to be just some guy, that has neither the physical prowess or the charismatic intelligence. He's just someone with a famous name and an inborn ability, and someone "evil" found and turned him into, presumably, a pawn. A powerful one, but still a pawn. I actually think it was a nice break from typical Hollywood, especially for a film that remained relatively formulaic.
Given the way Kylo Ren is portrayed in Ep 7, I think an inevitable comparison between him and the Anakin from Ep 2 is appropriate.
In Ep 2, Anakin is also a fledging padawan. He is young; he is not fully trained; he is hot headed and impulsive. Corny dialogues and scripts aside, however, he is infinitely more bada$$ and capable than Kylo Ren is. He help chased down and subdue an assassin. He escorted (and courted) Padme. He wiped out a whole Tusken Raider clan, "slaughtering them like pigs". He basically got pwn3d by Dooku, but Dooku is an extremely powerful, full fledge Sith Lord, so that one is excusable.
Poor acting / directing aside, Anakin is so much more than Kylo Ren is.
BTW, io9 has an interesting comparison between the film and the novel. Sounds like the book (unsurprisingly) fleshes out some scenes and explains some of the weird things going on in the film. Also, in the book, Starkiller base is supposed to use dark matter as the main weapon, not the matter taken from a star.

True, you can compare and you also can't in some ways.
Anakin was "the One" and his Force ability and potential would be unmatched. But again, it's too early to draw conclusions on Kylo.
In Ep2 Anakin has already received years of training as a Jedi.
We can't say much for Kylo but it seems his training is very limited and was cut short. His abilities shown so far are basic (push, freezing, limited mind reading).
Tusken Raiders aren't much. They're like Gamorreans. If given the chance, I'm sure Kylo would easily cut through them like butter.
Chewy did shoot Ren with the bowcaster which hit directly on the right side of his ribs/stomach. Could explain why he "struggled" in the light sabre duel against Finn and Rey. Ren kept on hitting the wounded area to numb or show it didn't hurt him.
Ren was cast perfectly. You felt exactly what you should have when he revealed himself.
This is a young scared boy who is being manipulated by someone much more powerful.
I love that he wears the mask to mimic vader and try to make himself seem like someone who has a commanding presence. Very much like our 30k ballas in gastown
