American Netflix on SMART TV?

Is there any way to use American Netflix on a Smart TV using it's built in Netflix app?

I get that on a pc it's easy as all you gotta do is find some proxy service and it'll mask the IP to some American one. But how do I do this on a Smart TV? I'd have to find a way to mask the IP at the router level somehow...?

And no, I will not lug my laptop to the tv and plug it in and watch it that way.

TIA!

Yep you have to use a proxy service and change some stuff on your router.

when you setup your network on your tv you can enter the dns setting (so you dont affect all your devices)

with my tv i had to set the region in my tv to the US first to get all the apps even though i had the dns setup

No, because it's not a VPN... it's spoofing your address via the DNS request.

They have specific directions on their website for setting up most brands of routers, TVs, BD players, game consoles, and operating systems - tells you exactly what menus to navigate and what entries to change.

No not necessarily.. more advanced routers like Buffalo which runs on DD-WRT can forward certain IP only (eg your TV) through the VPN tunnel. The rest of the network will run normally.

Most likely their DNS performance is not up to par compared to your local ISP or Google or openDNS.

I would suggest a DNS service over VPN, as VPN can really slow down your connection.

https://adfreetime.com/ was good for me until the services I needed it for stopped working. But Netflix still works. You get to use your full bandwidth rather than pushing all traffic through a VPN.

thanks for the replies guys. With your help I was able to get it as follows:

Blockless.com (free trial for 10 days - just in time for when I'm back at work)
(if you want a permanent solution, looks like https://adfreetime.com suggested by Skinny is cheaper than Blockless)
Netflix.com
Changed my Smart TV's DNS settings
Changed my laptops DNS settings
been watching US netflix since

no decrease in browsing speeds noted.

Just a note the European Netflix and cad Netflix have some great movies that aren't on the us one

I'm not sure about blockless but with unblock-us theres a drop down menu you can use to switch your Netflix regions

Bump. Any idea if I can watch 3D on Netflix? I have a new Sony Bravia and Apple TV, but having trouble finding any 3D content using either device. Is it restricted to US only?

it's weird...the 3d tvs are supposed to be able to access netflix's 3d content but it doesn't seem to work with either of my tv's

also my PS3 can access the 3D content but my PS4 can't

they don't have a lot of choices anyhow

I use unotelly, can choose ur location for different devices. We use it in all our households around the world for a multitude of reasons.

$50 US per year, well worth it

Has anyone used Hotspot Shield? I used it in the past, and it worked ok, and it's free. Is there any benefit to the paid services that people are mentioning, versus this free one? Or disadvantages to Hotspot Shield?

Seems to be the gold standard in this field.

My family has some very high tech members that do due diligence to the nth degree, with the results trickling down to me. Unotelly was one of those positives for family in Canada, UK, and for my move to Europe. My tv watching has remained unaffected.

Baby Jesus blesses unotelly!

Admittedly I've never used this service, but it's the same as anything, free isn't free, and a premium service will be way faster, more reliable, etc.

Depending on ur demand (I'm constantly watching or surfing foreign), a premium service is probably a saner way to go.
