Slow down and move over for “official vehicles” or face a stiff fine in 2015

Quote:
In the New Year, drivers will need to slow down and move over for more than just police and emergency vehicles flashing their lights.

Starting Jan. 1 the province is bringing in new regulations that will involve moving over and slowing down for any vehicle considered “official”. This includes police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, commercial vehicle safety enforcement vehicles, park rangers and conservations officers.

If drivers do not abide by the new regulation, they can face a $173 ticket and three penalty points.

This new regulation has been brought in to help make conditions for roadside workers safe.

The BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association initially raised concerns that the current regulation does not protect all roadside employees, like maintenance workers.

The new regulatory amendment will be simplified so that it includes all vehicles displaying a flashing, red, blue or yellow light.

In a statement from the province, the lights will make it easier for drivers to know the rules of the road since they will not have to check to see if the flashing light is an “official vehicle”.
Slow down and move over for ?official vehicles? or face a stiff fine in 2015 | Globalnews.ca

Drivers must now slow their speed to 70km/hr when in an 80km/h or over zone and to 40 km/hr when in an under 80km/h zone. Failure to abide by these amendments can result in a $173 ticket and three penalty points.

What difference does it make? Drivers here don't pull over for police/emergency vehicles despite that being a fineable offense, what makes them think they'll pull over for tow trucks, park rangers, etc?

Instead of making this new rule, I'd rather they just enforce the older one more strictly. Put a dash a cam on those emergency vehicles and fine very license plate that doesn't pull over by the alotted distance

Some people already do this and some people don't. The people who don't will continue not to because they don't give a shit. This law is pointless. They should be working on enforcing the passing lane law.

Fine the fucking clowns who cruise in the passing lane already! Fuckkkkk

Tell all your parents, relatives, siblings as well. This is my number 1 driving pet peave by far. Eventually one day when I'm behind some person who is simply oblivious to there even being anyone behind them I'm gonna pass on the right and brake check the idiot so I either send a frightening wake up call, or cause an accident. That's honesty the point im at.

I was about to say... you assclowns DO realize that this refers to such vehicles STOPPED and WORKING on the roadside, right?

But I guess that's a rhetorical question.

Any such vehicle DRIVING with their lights going when they shouldn't be are liable for a fine themselves (see other recent thread about the strict restrictions ambulance drivers are subject to).

Holy shit you guys got your panties in a bunch.

This new law, or actually, a law simplifying the wording for an already existing law, is for emergency and official vehicles that are already parked and on the side of the road. like a tow truck, or a cop who has pulled someone over, or an accident scene.

They really need to set up some signs and enforcement traps for this and better educate people, it seems most people don't know about the existing law so implementing a change to it will have little effect. I think this law is a good one but a tad hard to enforce since the odds of a police car being near someone pulled over with lights is slim.

At the end of the day I tend to move over (mostly on highways) when traffic is decently light for every vehicle pulled over with some kind of flashing light on it, be it emergency lights or a turn signal since you never know what that person is over there for and what they might be doing.

Some, but not all. I'd say maybe 40-50% of people do on the highway.

You drive a Honda... you aren't passing anyone.

Well considering proper driving includes checking your mirrors at regular intervals, shouldn't take too long even without sirens for someone to see flashing lights behind them and to move over.

BUT if you'd like I will use my train horn along with my beacon light to notify you all to get out of my way...

Get off your high horses, the OP makes no explicit indication of such thing. Yes it does state something about safety for roadside workers, but even the link to the story on Global has been edited to explicity state "for any stopped vehicle" because it was clearly ambiguous to begin with:

I'm a bit concerned for anyone who can't figure out that laws to protect roadside workers are about events occurring stopped at the roadside...where they work.

roadside workers already take so much precautionary measures.... i cant remember the last time there was construction where they dont close the lane off hundreds of meters ahead and have flag people holding the slow flag, cones, signs, etc..., not to mention the traffic caused by the work usually has everyone slowed down anyways...

i would assume any accident would be those caused by the carelessness of workers or stupid drivers but then this new law wont fix those drivers anyways... just an inconvenience to other drivers.

*biased since i am a driver and not a roadside worker... lol
