TIL: Going to Europe to get your car is cheaper than getting it here

TIL anyone can purchase a Volvo and get a free trip from the US to Sweden to tour the factory and test drive your car in the land that it was built. All costs including airfare and shipping the car to the US are complimentary. : todayilearned

I knew about EU pickup for BMW, Mercedes etc but never realized that it's actually cheaper in some cases to go pick up your car in Europe than to get it here from the dealer b/c of how export taxes and dealer fees work.

Volvo Canada will give you free round trip tickets and a night at a hotel (plus other goodies) to go to Sweden to get your car. Mercedes offers 7% off MSRP. Not sure what BMW offers but I hear Porsche offers this too.

Basically buy a European car each time you want to go see Europe for cheap (kinda).

Edit: http://www.volvocars.com/en-CA/sales...s/default.aspx - Volvo Canada's offer.

It's cheaper for the US because they have better sponsors and deals with the airliners and hotels, plus the exchange rate. There is a program for Canada, but it's way more costlier than the US, you might even be paying more with not that much savings with BMW and Mercedes. My family actually inquired about this when they got their 335xi, and the sales person who we knew personally told us they make little to no commission on it and is very rarely offered as an incentive because you are effectively buying it straight from BMW. Plus, BMW Canada couldn't secure better deals from airlines, so it's pretty much full price ticket. It may be changed now, but that's what I know.

I have a friend who did this when he picked up his 911 C4S. Went to the Porsche factory, drove around Europe for fun and broke it in for a week or two before shipping it home.

Lucky bastard.

Yup, that's why sales here pretty much don't even want to bother dealing with you if you're straight out asking about the European delivery program here.

No commissions for them.
No factory / national wide incentive discounts for you.

Semi OT: but which countr(ies) would you prefer taking your Euro Delivered car around?

Obviously most would say the Autobahn and Germany. But anywhere else? Cause if you're going to do the avg 'touristy' stuff like London and Paris - those cities, you're much better off with the public transportation.

For sure, screw that, head to Eastern Europe. Some of the roads that Top Gear has driven on look unreal and without nearly as much clusterfuck as the "famous" roads in the alps, etc.

Euro delivery on a Porsche is free, and it's awesome, if it's winter they even give you winter tires for the tour around Europe and then pop your OEM wheels on at port before it ships out.

AFAIK with euro delivery on a BMW, you actually save some money, there is a slight discount associated with it.

+ you get factory tour, free lunch, free insurance for two weeks, etc…

I am still bouncing back and forth the idea of euro delivery GT3, would be awesome to take it to the ring with a Porsche instructor and stay under 4500rpm lol…

EDIT: BMW and Porsche do not cover your travel costs, flights and hotel are your issue. THey provide, the car, insurance, experience, and the shipping back to NA

Italy>>>>> others...

Stay away from big cities, too congested and not as fun. Switzerland is also very strict with their traffic rules.

my buddy actually did this on his Mercedes E63S Wagon from WA

There are no incentives to do it in Canada and you have to pay for the flights hotel and stuff too but he said it was an amazing experience.

Here are some pics to his delivery:

I'm from Ukraine and I've driven cross-country in Ukraine. Trust me - you do NOT want to drive in Ukraine.

Still sounds like more fun than I'll ever have in a 911 C4S

Only volvo gives a discount in Canada. It may be advantageous to do a short lease.

BMW Mercedes charge full price. Porsche they charge extra I believe.

In the USA, it's a much better deal.
