Apple offers free repairs on faulty video motherboards

Just saw this post. It affects Macbook Pros 15" and 17" from early 2011 to early 2013. Mine was affected and I had to pay $700 for the repairs. Hopefully I get my money back soon....

MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues - Apple Support

Well known issue. Apple always denied it. Don't know why they're admitting it now.

jerche 02-21-2015 01:28 PM

I have a MacBook Pro 13" early 2011 and it's not on the list... what...I am pretty sure it's a motherboard issue too as it restarts once in awhile with distorted video sometimes

BrRsn 02-21-2015 01:32 PM

Do they mean the weird screen tearing / weird ass shapes I get occasionally?

Been dealing with that for awhile. Good to hear they're covering it. It's very sporadic on my MBP though

Armind 02-21-2015 08:20 PM

Sweet. Will bring in mine regardless.

Does your MBP already have to be broken or can anyone just call Apple with their serial # and get it fixed "preventatively"? I have an "Early 2011" MBP but have never encountered this issue yet. But at the same time I don't want to be screwed if it happens later on down the road...

Hard to sell cars when people don't think you'll back your product? Seems like PR for future sales

Apple is contacting customers who paid for a repair either though Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to arrange reimbursement. If you have not been contacted, but paid for a repair that you think was due to this issue, please contact Apple.

This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the MacBook Pro.

The program covers affected MacBook Pro models until February 27, 2016 or three years from its original date of sale, whichever provides longer coverage for you.

Looks like they will reimburse people who paid for repairs.

Can't believe it took them 4 years to figure it out. Feel sorry for all the people that got have already gotten rid of there laptops.

sorry, what I meant was they couldn't offer the quality program because there was denial from Nvidia side so they couldnt release the whole line.

Read it a while back on macrumors but as the site suggest it's rumors.

why wont they acknowledge some 13" has this problem too :( i have a flickering problem on my 1st gen mbpretina 13". its physical problem since moving it a certain way can reproduce the flickering/spasm.

threezero 02-22-2015 08:06 PM

i think my rmbp is affected. get weird video lock up and glitch sometimes, also act strange compare to other MacBooks when connect to professional video switcher.

anybody know how long the turn around is? getting it fix is important to me but also can't be without it for too long

nabs 02-22-2015 10:27 PM

My MBP is on the list, can I take it in for preventative maintainence?

I'm sure it's a problem but it's not related to this quality program, if you want it fixed I'm sure you'll be able to pay for it.

I'm pretty sure just to be safe. They didn't have stock so it was going to take 3-5 days for my computer

rriggi 02-23-2015 06:46 PM

Mine only goes distorted when I use HDMI, but aside from that its fine.

I thought thats how it operates :/

Impreza 02-23-2015 07:41 PM

So how will I know my serial number is the one that have the recall? When I enter it in, it just say my warrenty is over. I have a 2011 mbp 15". I had screen problem before my went away.
