The amount of misinformation in this thread is fucking horrifying. Many of you seem completely oblivious to what is happening here. The internet has been operating under the assumption of "net neutrality" since its inception. Only recently, due to a Verizon suit, did their jurisdiction to do so come under fire, because the internet was technically classified as an "information service" instead of a "telecommunication."
The FCC's role here isn't about censorship, and nothing about this proposal would allow them to regulate internet CONTENT. Their only purpose here is to keep the public's ability to connect to anything online "best effort." This means that ISPs, like Comcast, Verizon, etc., can't decide to block or slow down particular content because they don't like it. So, for instance, if we can't reclassify the internet as a telecommunication (which it IS) and net neutrality ceases to be the standard, then Verizon can legally decide that they want to significantly slow down traffic to, say, Netflix, because they view it as a competitor to their Redbox Online service.
Don't think this would happen? It already has. After the FCC's authority on net neutrality was shot down, Verizon purposefully let their network peering equipment with Cogent (who owns the fiber network that provides transit to Netflix, among other things) stagnate while upgrading the rest of their network, causing Netflix service to suffer for Verizon customers. Then they went to Verizon and told them that, if they wanted their customers through Verizon to have quality service, they needed to pay for Verizon's own upgrades, despite the fact that it is 100% Verizon's responsibility. Netflix then published speed and bandwidth tests through various providers to show its users that Verizon was responsible for their poor transit, and Verizon sent them a cease and desist letter. Netflix ultimately caved and paid for Verizon's updates.
The whole point of the reclassification is to PROTECT internet users from ISPs choosing how they can experience the internet. If there is a precedent that ISPs can handle their services and customers however they'd like, they will start nakedly blocking content that competes with them. They're already powerful enough to buy off half of congress. The last thing they need is MORE control.
This was such a fucked up thing that I still don't even know the facts of either side because people on both sides have pumped out so much propaganda, its hard to know what, exactly, anything really means.
The yes side said "If they vote no, its the end of the internet"
The no side said "If they vote yes, its the end of the internet"
I can't believe this was such a debate in the first place, and that it took so long to resolve. That in itself is fucking scary.
Becaus ethere is huge amounts of money involved. Look what happened to bell. If you where a Bell Cell phone customer you could watch Bell TV for free on your phone without using any of your data. CRTC but a end to that now they are going to court over it.

Paul and Kyle, PC tech YouTubers said on a live stream last night (abridged) "explain it to people like this, imagine they won't be able to access Pornhub anymore. They are only allowed to access some ISP 's proprietary porno site that only contains granny porn and you have to pay extra to access other websites."
