anyone remember the older decals that used to say "if you ch*nk, don't drive" or "don't ch*nk and drive". i used to see that when i was a kid growing up. i guess it takes less to get offended these days.

Lynda Steele had a segment about this on tonight's 6pm CTV news. I actually sent an email to her commenting on the reporting. I felt like the people whom she interviewed did not understand the premise of the C Driver sticker, therefore commenting on how it's racist, which isn't wrong of course, but I feel like it's a different interpretation from the "other side" (those who have the stickers on their car). Here's a little of what was in the email: Quote:
The store that sells these stickers, "Super Garage" is one of the "home bases" for the luxury/exotic car clubs centered around wealthy young men and women of mainland Chinese descent. Out of the probably 20-30 or so cars I've seen driving around with these stickers within the last year, mainly in Richmond, I can say with confidence that nearly all of those cars driving around with "C Driver" stickers on the back, have a legitimate ICBC-issued N sticker on the back. Furthermore, the cars that are adorned with the "C Driver" stickers are typically cars that have a sticker price north of $100,000. In the video, the vehicle which was filmed with the "C Driver" sticker on the back was a 2015 Mercedes-Benz E63 S-AMG, priced at an MSRP of $110,600 CAD according to the Mercedes-Benz Canada website. Also, behind the rear window there was also a visible ICBC-issued N sticker, a testament to the real meaning of the "C Driver" sticker.
If one does a little bit more investigating, one will notice that the majority of all cars with "C Driver" stickers are indeed either super luxury or hyper exotic vehicles. I believe there is a slight misunderstanding of the actual meaning of the "C Driver" sticker. From my perspective, based on a different cultural understanding (one that understands the stigma associated with wealthy young mainland Chinese men and women), what the sticker really means is a form of elitism, a piece of identification to say that this vehicle is owned by a wealthy Chinese individual. There is a reason why one rarely ever sees this sticker on normal regular-car-touting Chinese peoples' cars. This sticker was created by Chinese people, for Chinese people, put up for sale in a Chinese mall that runs a car club catering to wealthy mainland Chinese young men and women, in a suburb of Vancouver where the majority of the residents are Chinese.
Clearly there is a market for these and if one looks deeper into this issue, one can see that the issue may not be with racism at all, rather, it may be an act of superiority and elitism.

Or that seems to be the case. Many Chinese people I personallyknow are fine with the signs.
