Pump gas $120 when crude oil future (APR-2015) as of today is $45

Last week I was away for a business trip at Indiana State where regular gas price was $2.29 USD / Gallon (equivalent to $0.61 USD / litre) X 1.3 conversion exchange

It is still MUCH cheaper than what we are paying now. What makes our gas price so expensive up here? Can anyone (Oil and gas experts, your comment would be highly appreciated!) give a simple break down on how they determine the gas price?

willystyle 03-20-2015 03:47 PM

I don't understand our pricing either. At the current rate of crude oil at about $44USD per barrel, it should be under $1/L in Vancouver. It was like this few weeks ago at 0.98/L.

cdizzle_996 03-20-2015 03:49 PM

Well right off the top I believe we pay 32c/L in tax.

In theory though when crude oil was over $100 a barrel fuel was $1.50/L and tax was pretty much the same. Now crude oil is 60% percent cheaper and fuel is only 30%

Meant to edit and not quote myself..fail

Because we are fucking brainwashed IDIOTS. We riot over hockey games but when it comes to getting screwed by the government's monopolistic cabals we gladly bend over and take it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but couple of weeks ago when crude oil was sitting at around $44 per barrel, we were paying 0.98/L in Van. What's with the 25 cent increase per litre during this period? It's 1.23/L in Van today.

Manic! 03-20-2015 03:59 PM

If you are willing to pay a 1.20 a litre they will sell it to you for a 1.20 a litre. Whats the point for gas companies to sell it for less?

Why is gas so expensive in Metro Vancouver? | Watch News Videos Online

It's BS because the government taxes us on top of taxes and it doesn't really make sense at all.

This is precisely why we need the break down. Crude oil drop 40% doesn't not necessarily means the gas price will drop 40% because labour and carbon tax are always a constant in the formula.

$0.793 CAD / Litre (after conversion) vs $1.20 CAD / Litre seems to be a very huge mark-up

twitchyzero 03-20-2015 04:11 PM

yeah, but that's indiana
even just across the border, blaine is $2.7USD/gal

StylinRed 03-20-2015 04:38 PM

because oil companies are price fixing, i mean are having issues on the West Coast at their refineries, or are closed due to maintenance, and coupled with the low prices have, caused them to cut down the amount they're refining so prices rose...they would love to refine the same amount of oil as they were but they just can't

this is why we should have our own refineries and why canada should provide its citizens with our oil at cost :okay:

white rocket 03-20-2015 07:34 PM

Really it's because they can. And we'll pay. Is there some algorithm explaining why? Probably. Will it see the light of day? No.

Motor fuel taxes in Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

120
-44.28 (local taxes)

75.75 cents per L

seems like a logical explanation.

Good info above, I was misinformed.

it's not the taxes! the taxes havn't changed in the last 2 months. People who are blaming the taxes are directing it to the wrong people.

gas was at 99 cents when oil was at ~$51 dollar a barrel.

now it's at $45 a barrel and we are paying ~$1.22

The oil companies are fucking us up the ass and we take it willingly.
They say it's because there was an explosion at an oil refinery in california as well as a couple strikes/lockouts at a few other plants. But some of the lockouts have now ended yet I don't see gas prices going back down.

As well, the facility in burnaby is currently down for "maintenance".
How does that equate to 20 cents + a litre?

HKS PWR 03-20-2015 11:00 PM

The 20cent price hike in the last two months could be due to the change in gasoline mixture/formula for the summer (summer-blend vs. winter-blend).

What the fuck are they swapping/adding to cause a 20+ cent increase in price?

Are they adding some aged 18 year cherry oak ethanol?

SumAznGuy 03-21-2015 07:28 AM

You know someone is fucking with us when you can set your watch to the time of day by the gas prices.
High in the morning. Stations start lowering their prices in the afternoon. Dinner time all stations are at the low price.
By 11 pm, most stations are back up to the high prices.

Ronin 03-21-2015 08:06 AM

Bike lanes, probably.

pastarocket 03-21-2015 08:45 AM

We should have an RS mass protest and go to Bellingham to fill up on gas at the same time. No gas taxes from RS members for that day. :troll:

smoothie. 03-21-2015 08:49 AM

Wouldn't even phase those companies

underscore 03-21-2015 09:06 AM

We need a change to the taxes on gas, does anyone know the breakdown of what the taxes are actually spent on?
