Can I park here free?

I live across this intersection in DT and notice the spot in picture (with the question mark) doesn't have a meter, I always wonder if anyone can park there for free? saw a few time the ticketing officer just walk by but also see a car got ticket there once.

The end of your car needs to be no closer than 6m to the crosswalk. Unless you had a tiny smart car - I doubt your car would fit in that spot.

that spot is bigger then it appear on the pic. there's a Honda Pilot parked there now and are still plenty of room until the intersection. that street sign beside the green electric box that not in the 1st pic (traffic light control?) is just a no stopping sign pointing toward the traffic light.

I don't even know what type of ticket they can give you there from that angle. I would park there, no other signage saying you can't. and there's no meter associated with the spot.

Looks like it was designed to be an entrance/exit to that parking lot but they didn't shape the sidewalk for it?

can you mark 6 meters on the side walk? yeah it's vandalism but you'll make it obvious to any parking nazi.

Where does the 6m get measured from? The center of the crosswalk? The stop line?

Cause from the stop line to that pilot there is definitely not 6m.

I'm gonna guinea pig this for the good of the community. Parked here this morning, I'll post back after work if my car is still there and not ticketed. Wish me luck guys.

it should be measured from the closest crosswalk line.

So parked here from 6am till 4pm yesterday and came back to find my car still there and no ticket. After looking closely, I think you could probably get a ticket for being closer than 6m from the crosswalk, but no way of knowing unless someone actually measured it.

you just told everyone your secret free spot in DT...personally I would've kept it to myself seeing how you live right by it and just test it out to see whether you get a ticket or not.

as an aside, does anyone know if the 6m rule apply to actual intersections only or does it also apply to an alleyway/driveway/parking lot entrance?

I'm sorry but regardless of whether you got a ticket or not one day is not proof that it is legal to park there.

Also the parking officer is not going to need a measuring tape to prove:

1. that you shouldnt be parked that close to the intersection

&

2. that on a street full of metres, you can't park on the end of a row where there isn't a metre.

Proof:

The expansion joints on the sidewalk are anywhere from 3' to 4' (traditionally 1m, or 3.28')

Look at where 6m put you, so unless you have a car that is about 1 or 2 metres long, you can't park there brah.

I've definitely read that over before but couldn't remember those rules. I'll just assume it's safe to follow that in other municipalities outside the Vancouver proper.
