B.C. Transit in line for review from provincial finance ministry
BY STAFF REPORTER, THE PROVINCE MARCH 26, 2015

While it’s usually TransLink that grabs the attention, the provincial government’s focus is shifting to B.C. Transit as the Crown corporation responsible for 81 public transit systems outside the Lower Mainland will be getting a review.

The review is part of an examination of all major Crown corporations by the province. Since 2011, there have been reviews of Community Living B.C., ICBC, Partnerships B.C., the B.C. Lottery Corp. and B.C. Hydro.

B.C. Transit’s review will be done by the Ministry of Finance. It will look at and make recommendations on all aspects of B.C. Transit’s operations, planning, forecasting and financial performance.

B.C. Transit operates in conjunction with 58 local funding partners. It has a forecast operating budget of $103.9 million in 2015-16 and a forecast capital budget of $73.5 million

Transit service across B.C. has increased by more than 40 per cent since 2001 and the province has provided more than $1 billion in funding to B.C. Transit in that period.

The review is expected to be finished early in 2016.
