Becareful with tall speed bumps at 6300 Birch St Richmond

The speed bumps there are abnormally high. I drive a CLK55 with stock suspension. I've never had problems with speed bumps or drive ways anywhere until today. I drove over this speed bump at normal speed at 6300 Birch St in Richmond and my car bottomed out pretty hard. It's this newly developed town house complex near No.4 road and Granville.

The speed bump damaged possibly the drive and my car is making a loud clunking metal grinding noise when decelerating. The noise goes away if I'm accelerating. Sounds like something is hitting the drive shaft or something. It's 7Pm on a Sunday so I drove home slowly and will take it in to my mechanics tomorrow to figure out what went wrong.

PS. does ICBC cover this kind of damage or am I out of luck?

I think this would fall under your comprehensive as single vehicle incident. Which means deductible + premiums increase yo!

I did some research, Transportation Association of Canada says speed bumps should be no higher than 8cm, and the ramp needs to be 10x the height. Since speed bump that damaged my car is on a private road, if the speed bump is not within spec then the strata would be liable for the damage of my car. People have successfully won lawsuits due to speed bumps that do not meet safety regulation.

Once I get my car fixed tomorrow I will go back to measure that stupid speed bump to see if it is within spec.

there's a road in maple ridge (with a bunch of old houses) on a street that the mayor/former mayor lives on, and many many speed bumps were installed on it and they are abnormally high as well, you couldn't dream of doing the posted limit without getting air

i was certain there would be a regulation dictating the height of bumps but was always too lazy to dig up the info, that's good to know thanks

Off topic but does anybody find the speed bumps in the dog wash plaza (garden city alder ridge) exceptionally bumpy?

I drive a truck and it makes me rock violently

My girlfriend used to live there. One time I forgot to air up, literally became a teeter totter on the speed bump after I basically crashed onto the bump. Aired up, kept going

My girlfriend lives pretty much at that exact address/townhouse development

My fuel tank and muffler (lowest point on the car) scrape over all the speedbumps if I drive directly over, however if I put half my car on the sidewalk that exists beside all the speedbumps in that area I do not scrape at all. Mind you, my car is lowered quite a bit so a bit different from you! But the speedbumps in that development are really quite unnecessary.

Gf had a lowered car before and she just drove on the sidewalk to clear the bump. Got strata complaints LOL

Update: Got the car back from the shop. heat shield and exhaust got bent and they had to heat it up and bend it back. Just got billed 1 hour labour for $100.

I've contacted Transportation Association of Canada but they said they only make recommendations, it's up to the local jurisdiction to set the regulation. I've contacted the City's transportation planning to see what they say. I will hunt down the right authority that set the speed bump regulation to see if they are out of spec.

Don't count on cities changing even if you are 100% in the right pointing out road design deficiencies that don't meet spec.

I've been flat out told that the City of Vancouver will never change the traffic light timings for pedestrian controlled intersections even though it does not meet the spec.

I've had the buck passed so many times between the City of Burnaby and the Province on signal timings on Kensington at Hwy 1.

Good on you for going the legal way with things.

But I think it would be faster to take a sledge hammer and demolish the speedbump yourself, before the city gets back to you.

While we're on topic, There's a brutal speedbump on a new road in the new developments around Main and Terminal, called Switchmen St. The road is covered in big gouges from cars bottoming out on it, and the road has probably only been open about a year or less.

Often traffic can be heavy around there so if you're thinking of trying to take a detour, avoid this road!

There's some good information here. We should rename the title to "Official Speed Bump Avoidance Thread".

Good call, could get Mod to do it. It doesn't seem like I can edit title after posted.

PS. the City got back to me and I've gave them more info on exact location of the speed bump. Will wait and see how it goes.

if people can make an app that has red light cameras locations, they should also make it for speed bumps as well.

Dumb question but does this fall under the same rules. about every second day you can see oil marks running away from the first set of speedbumps (a lot more have been added since the picture) I know 2 or 3 people who have punctured their oil pan here its a ridiculous, this is the road the town office is on so they want people to go slow but the speed bumps are like 6 inches high.

Ricky you might be able to get them to make changes to the speed bump if you spray paint a penis on it, I remember reading another article where someone got the city to fix up potholes by spray penises over them. Not the most "by the book" method though

+1 for making this the "Official Speed Bump Avoidance Thread"

While we're at it, maybe make it the "Speed Bump and Super Shitty Road" thread. There are some brutal roads right in Vancouver that have bad grooves and recessed manholes, that aren't getting fixed anytime soon.

My current car isn't super low but will get lower; I did have a couple incidents with my President when I owned it, which involved pieces of my front bumper flying up onto my windshield

I also think people should do a screencap of Google maps and point out the street like I did. Took like 30 seconds to do with Pixlr Express.
