Is it possible to help a friend buy a car

My friend is moving from Vancouver to Toronto for work. He wants to purchase a car before he moves over since his company covers the cost of shipping for his vehicle. Unfortunately there's no 335i hardtop convertible on the market with the colour combination that he likes. Is it possible for me to purchase a vehicle and register his name onto the vehicle and ship it over to him? Has anyone done this before?

That seems like a lot of hassle and risk on your part for little to no reward ...

As for answering the question, I don't know.

I did it for one of my siblings decades ago. It is doable, we had it done at the BMW dealership. I think we even saved on the PST back then. If it is a person to person sale, things get more complicated, you need notorized documents etc.

For things like that, just buy it from the dealership.

He could have the transaction done directly with the dealer through fax and email.

You could go look at the car physically for him.

Cars sold and shipped sight unseen is quite common actually.

At the risk of stating the obvious, why doesn't he just wait and buy a car out there? If he already owned a car sure, but shipping a car that he doesn't own and can't find here just sounds pointless.

Takes less than 1 day to buy a car. How hard is it for him to buy his own car locally?

I'm pretty confused at this. He's moving to Toronto and wants to purchase a car before he moves over, but there is no car that he likes locally here in Vancouver so he wants you to buy the car when there is one that he likes pops up and ship it over to him? So he will already be in Toronto while you do all this? Maybe it's me that's just tired at the end of a long day but this whole thing makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure he means that currently there aren't any of like he wants in Van, or he would be one now and ship it when he moves.

Did you read the first part? He wants to buy a car before moving over to Toronto.

Ok makes sense. He wants to take the time to shop for a car. Purchase it and ship it to Toronto so it is there waiting for him when he arrives.

Since he's talking about shipping the car there, I assume he's shopping the car locally to ship it there.

If you are shipping on behalf of him, it means he's already in Toronto and cannot do it himself? Why the hell is he still asking you to shop in Van instead of shopping himself in Toronto?

He told me that there's rust issues with cars from the east. I have no idea. I just linked him this thread and told him to buy it himself.

Well yeah, but since he's in the east anything he drives through a winter will end up just as shitty as cars already out there. If he's not going to drive it through the winter then just buy a low-mileage one that hasn't seen a winter and it won't make a difference where it's from.

As a side note if he's moving from Van to Toronto he might want to rethink the convertible part, I can't imagine wanting to drive with the top down during a Toronto summer.
