Guys, wake the fuck up! The best thing we can possibly do next season is tank.

Our core is past their prime and our prospects cupboard is pretty bare with anything resembling a cup team.

Benning might get shit on for making these trades today, but I'd rather have a legitimate cup contending team than a perennial playoff team that doesn't win it all.

We've been blessed with some really good hockey for almost a decade now. The message is clear: it is time we rebuild.

Trust me when i say i would love nothing more than to see this team absolutely tank and bottom out for a few seasons
Hell, Chicago endured multiple smelly deuces of a season before they even had a sniff at the playoffs

But let's be real, the owners will never let that happen. We'll never see the Canucks be bad enough for a draft lottery. Just bad enough to be outside with a "seemingly" good shot for the playoffs but not good enough to be within reach of any elite prospect pools. That's part of the reason why we'll probably never see the Canucks hoist the Cup in the coming decade barring some divine intervention.

If there's one thing Canadian teams can't do, they can't rebuild for shit. They're either on the bubble of the playoffs and/or the elite prospect pool. Except Edmonton, they just flat out can't rebuild for fuck all but at least they've got luck when it comes to picking.

The team will never tank like that because the fans are so fucken fickle that they will stop going to the games. In all of the other Canadian markets the arenas are packed win or lose but here our corporate fan base is fucken pathetic and it drives me crazy.

Calgary is a great example of a quick rebuild. Just a couple years back, they were just awful and now look at them. They have both great prospects and an even better outlook.

The same thing was said about Colorado. I do recall they missed the playoffs last year.

Pretty much Boston, Chicago and Pittsburgh are the only examples of rebuilds that worked and Chicago seems to have a good outlook whereas Boston is back to being in a rebuild mode. I foresee Pittsburgh will also be going into a rebuild mode in a few years.

yeah but they were also pretty lucky
who'd have thought that Gaudreau would be that effective
or that Monahan would be so consistent at scoring
or that Giordano could have a Norris-calibre season
or that Russell and Wideman would step in and put up points with Giordano gone
or that Bennett would be so effective so early in his career in the playoffs
and so on

That could be the Canucks next season if
Shinkaruk makes the team and puts up 60 pts
Horvat becomes a 20 goal scorer or dare we say, 25 goal scorer
Virtanen makes it and starts his career as a 20 goal scorer
McCann makes it and becomes a 40 pt man as a two way center anchoring the 3rd line
Linden Vey gets his shit together and gets 50 pts
Tanev becomes an elite shutdown dman and Edler puts up 40pts
Hamhuis plays lights out and doesn't get injured
Markstrom finds his game in the NHL and carries his AHL numbers over

those are all dreams though, things that happen to teams not named Vancouver or Canucks. If even 2 of the things i mentioned there would happen i'd already consider the season a success regardless of where we end up in the standings.

Pens are gonna shit the bed so bad when Crosby and Malkin declines, they have like nothing left in the prospect cupboards and they've pretty much traded away their picks year after year with no shits given to the future to stay relevant

Then you take a look at their ugly cousin, the Edmonton Oilers.

I lost count of how many first overall draft picks they have. But that's enough reasons for an owner to prefer a retool over a rebuild.

have you seen that pacific division? I'm pretty sure we'll be beaten to a pulp... if we were in the east, ya maybe we'll be a playoff bubble team, but in the west and our division specifically, i'm confident we'll be bottom 1-2

LA/Flames/Ducks will probably sweep the season series easily

Sharks/Oilers/Coyotes are all teams Canucks can and will probably stay afloat against
standings wise, i wouldn't be surprised if they end up at the top of the bottom 3 in the division

Calgary got there because they not only had the prospects but had the balls to play their prospects in NHL games and potentially lose a lot of games.

It depends on the prospects though. Edmonton has been doing that for almost a decade and look where they are.

Like 604__boi already mentioned, the Calgary retool/rebuild required so many moving parts to go Calgary's way. Someone also brought up Colorado, who I think are in a much better situation youth/skill wise than Calgary/Vancouver/Edmonton atm. And they ended up reverting quite quickly last season after a successful season playing their kids. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if Calgary pulled the same stunt next season and fell out of the playoffs.

As cool as it would be to see all of Van's top-end prospects make the team (read: given a spot as per many fans in Vancouver would prefer), it's more likely to fall into Edmonton's situation as opposed to Chicago's.

Probably has something to do with being around in the league for a decent amount of decades and 0 cups to show for.

Asked if there was anyway he might have returned to Orlando this season, McGrady said: "Honestly, as long as John Weisbrod was the GM there was no way, no way I'd step another foot in a Magic uniform. It was just his whole demeanor and the whole way he goes about doing business and doing things. I don't know if I can say this, but I'm gonna say it, 'He's an (expletive)."

McGrady said that he was infuriated when Weisbrod took shots at him in the weeks following the June trade. The day the trade became official, Weisbrod was asked if McGrady was his type of player and he responded with a terse, "No!"

"I was so (expletive) because I was sitting back and listening to everything that was going on in the offseason," McGrady told ESPN. "He calls me up because I told him basically that I wanted out and he says, 'We're going to take the high road on this.' I was like, cool, because I'm not going to say anything bad. I'm going to be a professional about this and be quiet. I wake up a couple of mornings later, man, and he's just going off on me, straight blasting me."

Weisbrod said Friday before the Magic's game against Seattle that he didn't want to respond to McGrady. Said Weisbrod, "I promised (Houston general manager) Carroll Dawson that I wouldn't take any more shots at the kid."

For years Canucks fans have been saying, clean house for picks, tank a season, get a high draft pick.

When it's finally happening, Canucks fans say "I am now cheering for Edmonton."

why would you spend on free agency this year? very shitty pool. at the moment next year looks great, of course most will get re-signed tho.
tb ufa: stamkos. rfa: kucherov, killorn
cal ufa: giordano rfa: monahan, gaudreau
la: kopitar, lucic
philly ufa: vorachek rfa: coots, b.schenn
nash rfa: jones, forsberg
pitts ufa: perron rfa:maata
other ufa: staal, byfuglien , kesler, okoposo, e.johnson, seabrook
rfa: strome, jenner, krug

some teams might not be able to re-up like philly, la, or tb. so there is a good chance for offer sheets or possibly a good ufa

Botchford: Canucks season ticket holders boo Benning for refusing to trade Miller

Quote:
The Canucks could have traded Ryan Miller. There were offers.

It was one of the stunners that seeped out of the team’s raucous Summer Summit with season ticket holders Thursday night at Rogers Arena.

It was also a decision that wasn’t exactly greeted with a hug from the fans.

Both Trevor Linden and Jim Benning took on a series of pointed questions from a fan base that’s clearly still riled up over the recent moves.

Management did not waver.

None of their moves has been more controversial than the Eddie Lack trade. It took all of nine minutes for fans to start chanting Lack’s name.

Up till now, most believed the Canucks didn’t have many options when it came to their goalies.

Turns out they did.

“We could have moved Ryan Miller,” Benning revealed. “There were teams calling on Ryan Miller.”

Benning was cut quickly off by boos.

Most have believed the Canucks made the unpopular move to trade Lack because they couldn’t unload Miller’s contract. It has two more years on it at $6 million per.

The general manager went on to explain he believes in having a veteran No. 1 goalie with a young goalie playing behind him.
