Bold statement. I hope you're right but I don't think it will happen this season.

McCann has been the best forward tonight imo.
His passes have been crisp and seems like he's got good vision.

Virtanen has been pretty disappointing so far.

No worries. Canucks are just saving it for the 3 on 3 OT.

"last goal wins!"

Miller is on the decline. Most people thought he did a 'good job' even though he had a 2.53 goals against average and .911 save percentage

I've found going on swings now gives me that sick in the stomach feeling too. Ive had no concussions, love and still enjoy thrill rides, and I'm obviously no NHL player. But something about that motion...

Maybe it's just part of getting old. Called your mid-30's

Same here- playing on swings/going on the Pirate reeks havoc on my head/stomach. Everything else is a-ok.

That said, I'm sure a concussion history can definitely make things like that more prickly.

He did an okay job. He got wins, which was the most important thing, but a lot of those early wins came because our offense bailed him out of games where he allowed 4-5 goals, not because he was good.

He did get better as the year progressed and tended to thrive when the team in front of him was being outplayed.

I don't mind Miller and I'm probably one of the few who thought Miller was better than Lack last year (or at least equal; I posted a wall of text a couple of months ago outlining my reasoning backed up by stats, don't feel like reposting it), but he's one of many players we have whose cap hit exceeds his performance by a fair margin, which is my main reason why I'd have preferred keeping Lack over Miller.

If you look around the league (and to our Presidents Trophy winning teams), the best teams are loaded with guys whose performance exceeds their contracts and, typically, only have a couple of players whose contracts exceed their performance.

Using the 2010-2011 Canucks as an example, since we're all familiar with them. The Sedins were making $6.1M each as successive Art Ross and league MVP winners. Kesler was making $5M as a 40-goal scorer and Selke winner. Burrows was making $2M as a 30-goal scorer. Hamhuis was our highest paid dman at $4.5M and we had Bieksa, Edler, Salo, and Ehrhoff all making less than $4M. Tanev and Schneider were on entry-level contracts. Hansen was making $0.8M. Raymond and Samuelsson both produced 25+ goals for $2.5M each. Malhotra, considered to be overpaid at $2.5M when signed, turned out to be an early front-runner for the Selke before suffering that extremely unfortunate eye injury late in the season that derailed his career. And we added Higgins and Lapierre at the trade deadline, who were both reliable bottom 6ers. And, as much as I dislike Rome, his cap hit of $0.75M was very reasonable for his contributions. Luongo was in the first year of his $5.333M x eternity contract. About the only dead weight we had was Ballard at $4.2M to be a #6/#7 dman. Top to bottom, every player (except Ballard) either lived up to or exceeded their cap hit.

Look at Benning's team this year and it paints an extremely different picture.

Forwards:
D. Sedin - $7.000M (19th)
H. Sedin - $7.000M (19th)
Vrbata - $5.000M (66th)
Burrows - $4.500M (86th)
Sutter - $3.300M (150th)
Dorsett - $2.650M (180th)
Hansen - $2.500M (185th)
Higgins - $2.500M (185th)
Prust - $2.500M (185th)
Vey - $1.000M (273rd)
Baertschi - $0.900M (339th)
Horvat - $0.894M (346th)
Kenins - $0.575M (>360th)

The Sedins and Vrbata, if they perform like last year, will exceed their cap hits. Baertschi and Horvat should exceed theirs given they're getting 4th line money. Hansen and Higgins are being paid as 2nd/3rd line tweeners, which is about on par, but not much chance they exceed. Dorsett and Prust are in the same pay range, but are very clearly not 2nd/3rd line tweeners (3rd/4th line tweeners). Burrows is being paid as a top line forward, but is probably more like a 2nd/3rd line tweener. Sutter is being paid as a 2nd liner, which he may perform at this year, but he's slated to become a top 100 paid forward next year, which seems very unlikely. Vey is Vey. I want to believe he'll be better, but he still looks weak as fuck after an entire summer of training with the Canucks' training staff.

Defensemen:
Edler - $5.000M (36th)
Hamhuis - $4.500M (49th)
Tanev - $4.450M (56th)
Sbisa - $3.600M (90th)
Bartkowski - $1.750M (134th)
Weber - $1.500M (139th)

Edler, Hamhuis, and Tanev are all paid as #2 dmen. I'd say they're all about on par with that, but I'd say the odds of them performing as #1s is out of the question. Sbisa in the middle of the pack as a top 4 dman is laughable. If Weber is kept with Hamhuis, I'd say he'll probably outperform his cap hit, although I'd argue that Weber really has no business getting top 4 minutes, which kind of offsets that a bit. I haven't seen enough of Bartkowski to judge.

Goaltenders:
Miller - $6.000M (8th)
Markstrom - $1.550M (38th)

Miller is very obviously not a top 10 goaltender in the league anymore. Markstrom is being paid as a top 10 backup, which I think is a reach for his NHL resume, although I personally think he'll outperform that this coming year given what he accomplished last year in the AHL.

I don't think we'll be awful this year, but I don't think we'll be that good, either. We have too many guys who have next to no chance of living up to their contracts, many of whom have been brought in and/or signed by Benning. Unless the Sedins have a Torts-like year, I'm assuming we still finish in the 10-15 range in the league. Whether that's good enough to get us into the playoffs in an improved Pacific division remains to be seen, but if we miss, we won't be getting a good pick unless we get lucky and win the lottery.

So in other words...
We'll just miss the playoffs or get 4-5 games in the first round.

Exciting!!

That's the thing. The way this team is built means its gonna be just good enough, but has long ways to go

I really think we are starting to see a lot of just good enough teams. The salary cap has forced a lot of parity around the league.

Look at LA and Chicago. They're no longer the Stanley Cup stacked team.

I would have said "Brad Richards" just to troll Crosby.

Richards is from the east Coast (Prince Edward Island).
