Hornets nest in neighbours yard

A basketball sized hornets nest has found home on the soffit of the neighbour's house and continues to grow larger as time progresses. We have already spoken to the neighbour about it but they basically shrugged it off and oddly don't seem to care enough to deal with it even though their grandma lives with them and frequents the backyard that the nest is located in. Our tenant's entrance is also quite close (~15 feet) to the nest. Can't really just ignore it in this case as summer has just begun and it's close to an entrance way.

Couldn't really find any Vancouver bylaws related to the issue so I'm wondering if anyone has ever been in a similar situation. We've already spoken to the neighbour several times about it. Burning it with fire isn't an option, nor is attacking it with a pressure washer. They don't seem interested in hiring pest control and we're definitely not going to shell out as it should be their responsibility.

well that sucks. i was going to tell you to set it on fire..

Get a stick and knock it to the ground in the middle of night and MAKE them deal with it.

Alternatively just call the bylaw office and explain the situation. Make them do something about it

Take a BB gun and shoot it until it falls down

zilley 07-12-2015 02:24 PM

i always wish i had one at my house.

murd0c 07-12-2015 02:26 PM

frozen paintballs at it, hopefully it will knock it down and cause bad damage and then your neighbour will have to do something.

Fill a bin up with some lighter fluid and put it underneath the nest. Hit said nest down and then set on fire. Pls record.

MindBomber 07-12-2015 03:40 PM

I don't care how to handle it. I only care that you have a camera capturing the action when you do. And that you're more decisive than danned was with his neighbor's pie plates.

^that was such an awesome thread. Provided much needed entertainment.

AzNightmare 07-12-2015 03:47 PM

lol, did you use the search button?

Posting on RS about bee nests will surely guarantee no serious answers.
That being said, I think some of the solutions suggested are valid though.

Please record whatever you end up doing.

Blast them with pressure washer, film the process, and collect thanks.

fliptuner 07-12-2015 04:21 PM

Its been a year since we did this. Maybe it's time to posse up.

ICE_BOY (now fliptuner), RECKLESS & RB PEST CONTROL

Now, since you say fire isn't an option, I suggest we fashion a giant poking device (as on Friends) and drop that fucker off the soffit.

Or...OR.... we take said device, add a noose to the end and attach a garbage bag beneath it. Hook around the nest and drop it into the bag from a distance.

K, LET'S GO!!!!!

+1 for recording the action. might i suggest a helmet cam?

There was a thread on here a few years back involving a shitload of wasps or bees on someones swing set. I can't remember what it was called but the destruction was documented in glorious detail.

As far as OP's concerns, I'd suggest calling up bylaw and see if they can answer your question or at least point you to someone who can.

flip i was disappointed you guys didn't flick a cigarette on the wasp nest and then do a slow walk away

vitaminG 07-12-2015 08:56 PM

Bee keepers will typically remove honey bee nests for free.
