Volunteering Abroad

Does anybody have any experience with volunteering abroad? It has been on my mind for some time now but never got the time. I've done some research and have been looking at an organization called International Volunteer HQ. Has anyone had any experience with them before?

dont pay (much) to volunteer abroad.
try to stay for free and just consider your work to be payment.
i did mine on workaway.info. i went to uganda for a month and worked 5hrs a day and just had to help out with electricity costs ($3 per day). food was not included but my room was.

when i see voluntourism places charge thousands per week it makes my blood boil. international volunteer hq seems like their prices arent too obscene but man, the majority of them are totally for profit.
