What do you pack for bush camping?

I am trying compile a list of things to pick up for bush camping:

I have stoves, tents, hot water shower kit, and all that jazz. Im thinking more for emergencies or recovery.

So far i have come up with this:

GPS
Flat repair kit
battery jumper kit
Air compressor
Fuel Jerry cans (?L)
Water Jerry cans
Bear Spray
Advanced First Aid kit(only since i have First Responder)
Chainsaw
Hi-lift jack
Shovel
Traction Mat
Basic Tools
Tow Straps/Shackles

depends on the type of camping...

sometimes i go in with a knife an axe and a cooking pot and figure out the rest lol.

for car camping i take the usual stuff. list is pretty similar to yours except that instead of bear spray i take a 12 gauge or my 44 level gun.

Not a bad investment if you travel in bear country. Its worth it for me because i used to head out camping with my girlfriend and since her safety was in my hands it was really a no brainer.

A good pump action 12 gauge is really all the firepower you need. Consider it the jack of all trades. Slugs for distance and heavy predators. Buckshot for covering a large area. Birdshot/target loads for fun.

Keep it loaded with alternating rounds of buckshot slug buckshot slug etc.

That way youre left flexible. If you need to engage something at a distance and you know you have buckshot chamered its as easy as racking the action and youre ready to engage.

You should try minimalist/survival camping. Hike into an area with the essentials and live off the land. Pretty interesting experience.

On top of the usual camping gear I have these with me.

For recovery...
- chain saw
- 2 20l fuel cell
- Receiver Hitch D-Ring
- winch
- full spare tire
- Safety seal tire repair kit
- Arab straps

I know I'm missing a few items to add on that list but. I don't hold back on recovery specially when I explore on my own.

A battery booster would be a very good one to add

I feel so under prepared and under packed now..

TjAlmeida 07-28-2015 02:08 PM

I think this would go well with op's question..

Along with a wide array of supplies what Is general for camping, what do you pack/do/buy to prepare your truck/suv for camping.

I just picked up a 2012 tacoma as my sole vehicle now.

Starting off slowly with this vehicle, but I am more concerned for when I do go what the truck should be equipped with.

Guess some things depend on the conditions the vehicle willbe put through.

Right now my short list is

2015
Fox or radflo 2.5 shock lift 2.75" in lift roughly.
16x8 rims with 285/75r16 bfg all terrain ko2

2016
Regear to 4.56 or 4.88
On board compressor for rear air locker
Soft top camper with roof top tent
Hi-lift
Full size spare tire

*if I can afford it plate bumpers front and rear, and sliders .

GabAlmighty 07-28-2015 02:11 PM

First thing I would buy before heading into the bush is a recovery strap. And depending on what/where you're planning on going people seem to be getting more and more VHF radios these days so I would put that on the list. And a winch if you're going by yourself a lot.

Also, hi lift is pretty useless unless you have sliders.

Good lists here . Will be grabbing little things here and there over winter with the plan to hit the bush next spring/summer with the family.

Slightly off-topic question: What jack options are there for those with a lift but no sliders or bumpers? Pack more wood to gain height on the stock jack? Seems sketchy.

RRxtar 07-28-2015 04:08 PM

get a Lift-Mate for your Hi-Lift. by far makes your Hi-Lift far more useful.

Also get a Hi-Lift, not a no name farm jack death machine

T4RAWR 07-28-2015 07:16 PM

i use the hi-lift with the lift mate.

works like a charm.

Not necessarily, although limited with stock body you can get the rim attachment for the hi lift.

Tegra_Devil 08-13-2015 01:06 PM

Do any of you guys rock a Tablet for GPS in the bush instead of Garmin or something like that?

just wondering what tablets have the best internal GPS to use with pre-downloaded maps(i.e BC Backroads, etc)
