Film or digital?

Had a 645D at one point. But it's not exactly the same experience I used to get with my uncle's Hasselblad with 6x6 film.

Film or digital? I shoot both. I own two Rolleiflex cameras and a Hasselblad for film, and have access to 50MP & 60MP Hasselblad & Phase One systems through work...

I've been looking for a medium format camera to play around with. Don't want to spend too much money. I think I want 6x6 so if Hasselblads are too expensive, I think I'm going with a Bronica SQ-A. $400US for a decent kit in excellent condition.

I'd love to get a Hasselblad but I don't like stuff that's too used. I prefer to buy deadstock old stuff or near mint examples so a Hasselblad would cost well over a grand with the stuff I need.

Hasselblad 500 was built like tank. My uncle shoots landscape for hobby and has lugged his gear in every terrain imaginable (Antartica, Amazonian forest, Kenya... etc) and he has had the same kit (Hassy 500+2 lenses) for easily 2-3 decades already because I'm in my 30s and for as far as I remember, he always had that camera.

Furthermore, the vintage stuff has pretty much their value settled. So, if you buy a good used-decent condition set today, it's almost guaranteed to get the same amount of money. So cost of ownership is really minimum when you decide to sell one day.

The only thing expensive in MF is really the film

I know but realistically I just want a fun toy for some MF portraits so I'd like to stay around $500 for a body, 120 back, one lens and waist level finder.

Have you considered Rolleiflex TLRs? The camera swap meet at the Croatian Centre is coming up soon...you might find some good deals there if you go early.

Not really? I want interchangable lenses and I like the formfactor of Hasselblad.
