50k budget for new car, opinions/experience

I could make this decision myself, and obviously still will but the community in Vancouver has a vast taste for cars and performance so why not ask you guys/gals.

50k budget to spend on a new 2016 car....

What would you end up getting?

I've owned

-ser spec v
-civic sir ep3
-srt-4
-wrx sti (2)
-skyline (3)
-other 4 cylinder turbos

Never owned

-a V8

Only thing is preferably the car should be AWD since I hit the mountain in the winter.

GO!

Off the top of my head, V8 AWD at the 50k price range will have to be used.

You mentioned new, 2016.

For new 2016, 4 cyc though:

S3?

The next year (or maybe early next year) will have the virtual cockpit option, so that is worth a gander.

Biased.

----------

Used, AWD, V8, MANUAL (if you like Manual), go for the 2011 Audi S5.

It's around $35k used.

And, you save a bunch, which you could use to mod it up.

Yes the new S3 and Golf R look like very good options, I have test driven both already, personally I enjoyed the Golf R more.

As for V8, I know new AWD and V8 isn't possible....but in a used category I have been interested in the S5 just haven't driven one yet.

If by the mountain you mean a place like Whistler or one of the closer ski hills, having AWD just for that purpose is pointless. Now, if you live up North like Berzerker or in the Interior like myself, then it might be useful (and even then, it's only optional imo). In the GVRD, not much point having it.

My picks:
S3 / Golf R - has awd
STI - has awd + you had subis before
EVO (final edition) - has awd
TLX SHAWD - subtle choice
Q50 AWD - subtle choice
Regal GS - sleeper choice (has manual option as well)

Not sure if these are your cup of tea but you can get one nicely equipped for around $50k. Not sure about 2016 pricing but you can trim off options to keep the price down (more performance, less luxury options).

Does car or SUV or truck matter?

SQ5? With a few incentives you can get one around 50k.

I test drove the SQ5, and it's a hoot to drive.

You get trunk space, acceleration, massive torque, and generally good handling for a SUV.

For the performance, quality (interior), it's a good "value".

But, it's near the end of the model cycle.

The original Q5 came out in 2008, and with a 7 or 8 year cycle (with a refresh 2 years ago), the Q5 range is going to be redesigned in a year or two.

m235i rwd 6mt is 45k
m235i awd 6mt is 48k

Factory mechanical LSD option is around 2-3k. Pretty much the only option an enthusiast really needs.
Personally, I believe rwd and manual would be the only way to go on a bmw.

The 235i wasn't a choice because I had such trouble actually finding one, and I wasn't aware they came in AWD.

^^hahaha. Me Too. Like a week ago. Too funny.

OP: Are you looking to spend $50K? Or is that just what you have allocated to purchase a vehicle? I'm lovin' the new Taco so that would be on my list with money left over for goodies. Also a 4Runner. Brand new under $50K fully loaded is doable. Really can't go wrong with Toyota from a reliability, value, comfort, and resale standpoint.

The new STI would be worth a look. I'm not really into it but it is a nice car for the money. No euro love from me as I'm not a fan.

The Acura TLX SHAWD is not a bad option.

50k can get you the fully loaded elite trim and comes with all the bells and whistle of latest car gadgetery. The SHAWD is very good, although some people might not like the fact that it's front biased.

Granted the transmission is a bit wonky at first, but after a few weeks in, it gets better. I think the car learns your driving habits and adjusts accordingly.

But if you are looking for a fun car, as other have mentioned, go BMW 2-series or Audi S3. The smaller size/weight would make tons of difference.

Another good one would be an Xterra, they are going out of production, but a great capabale off-roader, and they Can be had for much less than your budget fully optioned out.

Plus you can get them in 6MT.

These types of vehicles with proper off-road gear like locking diffs, and proper trail suspension are going extinct, and with a 6MT they are like unicorns.

If you buy a brand new 6MT, PRO-4X xterra, next year when they are no longer available you will be able to sell it for next to no loss.

I was thinking of picking one up for that sheer fact, but unfortunately I need a pickup for the instances where I might need to put something in the back.

Do factory order and euro delivery. Drive around on the ring then ship it back.
