| Brace Yourself for MORE Bike Lanes!! Quote: Vancouver City Council approves plan for 12 new bike lanes
More bike lanes are coming to the streets of Vancouver after a five-year bike lane expansion plan was approved by Vancouver City Council Thursday.
The plan calls for the addition of eight new bike lane routes in downtown Vancouver, including Stanley Park’s Park Drive, Bute Street, Burnaby-Drake streets, Smithe-Nelson streets, Cambie Street, West Waterfront Road within Port Metro Vancouver’s jurisdiction, Water-Alexander-Powell streets through Gastown (also known as the “Portside Greenway”), and the Granville Street Bridge.
Four other routes are planned outside of the downtown peninsula on Gore Street, Hudson Street, Kent Street, and Commercial Drive.
Some of downtown’s roads could see street parking space losses of between 25 to 50 per cent. Further public consultation and approvals are required before changes can be made.
Council also approved plans to improve a number of existing bike land routes and start a one-year pilot project to allow skateboarders use bike lane infrastructure. The move to allow skateboarders to use bike lanes not only promotes safety but also increases the utility of the bike lanes, which experience dips in ridership during the wet and cold winter months.
The City claims there has been a 16 per cent increase in bike trips this year over 2014. It is aiming to have at least half of all trips be made by cycling or public transit by 2020.
In addition to the discussions on bike lanes, Council discussed and gave final approval for the B.C. Passenger Board’s decision to grant Vancouver’s four taxi companies a combined total of 58 temporary taxi licenses for the holidays. The license for extra cabs ends on January 7.
Map of the 5-year plan to expand cycling infrastructure in Vancouver (click to enlarge): | For fucks sake.. Is it not bad enough? With the viaducts being torn down, and now less roadway and more congestion, it solidifies that I will not enter the downtown core in 5 years with a car.
Bolded are 2 main arteries into downtown that will get COMPLETELY fucked once this goes through, and then Commercial Drive... On the news yesterday they interviewed some business' and the owners are pissed. Having 2 bike routes going South/North (1-2 block East and 1-3 blocks West) and tons going East/West, it will be good game for cars on Commercial Drive aswell. (As if it wasn't bad enough to try to park anywhere near a restuarant there)

The commercial drive ones are fucking stupid. There is almost no parking for residents around comercial let alone business patrons. I almost always have to park a block or two in on the "resident only" parking when I'm down there, regardless of the time of day, and now you want to take away even more parking?
Bike lanes are fucking empty.

I ride most work days and I find this fucking atrocious. Vancouver really fucking hates motorists. Like, there's only so much road, and then they try and pack the lanes even more with bus lanes, bike lanes and car lanes all into one. WTF.

haven't dine in DT for over a year (expect sept for a friend wedding), haven't shop in DT for a few years and this trend will continue. There are better restaurant/shopping area with more parking space.

I see what the OP has done here -- took the article right out of RS's favourite news source -- Vancity Buzz.
And fxxk this... I better go to all my fav Commercial Drive restaurants while I still can -- before the fxxking bike lanes completely fxxk the area up. Both pedestrian and vehicular traffic is already so packed there, and we are going to replace the fully utilized roads there with empty bike lanes.
Perfect. |

Looks like pretty soon everyone will have to invest in a bike rack for the car. Pack the bike up, drive to a parking lot close to wherever you want to go, park the car, and ride the bike to the destination.

Damn, transit operators are going to be pissed about Commercial Drive. It's already tight enough driving an articulated bus through that area anyways!

The only real irks I have about the bike lanes are
1) no right turns in DT for us drivers -_-
2) no one uses them... including cyclists

What a fucking waste of taxpayer money. Yes, let's spend all this money, effort and time working on a mode of transport that is only really viable for 5 months out of the year. Not to mention it will make the downtown traffic worse than it is now, which IMO is hard to believe. So happy I don't work downtown and go very rarely. And when I move out I am definitely not going to live in Vancouver at this rate that Bike Boy is ruining the city.
Nobody with a respectable job wants to come into work, soaked from the rain and smelly from sweat... whereas, the majority of people would be better served if that money was spent on public transit which (ideally) works efficiently 365 days out of the year.

I understand that this is strictly a Vancouver solution (as in, from City of Vancouver for City of Vancouver alone), but instead of blowing all this money away, it would have been far better to earmark all that costs and pledge it towards a regional (ie. Metro Vancouver-wide) fund that aims to resolve the region-wide public transit funding shortage that Translink always claims to have.
Financially, this is a much smarter solution since:
1) the city is not wasting money on a non-solution that only works for a small number of people (ie. cycylists), and is completely unviable for a solid 6+ months in a year.
2) until other municipalities cough up the same funds, CoV doesn't actually have to spend anything, so they can still take advantage of having that money sitting around to do whatever
Politically, it is also a good plan because:
3) it gives the illusion to Vancouver residents that the City is doing something to address the traffic problem
4) it puts pressure on other municipalities to come up with a matching program to address the region-wide traffic problem
Man... I should go run for mayor next time around (and count on RS as my think tank). |
