in the movie, his character is killed in an early experimental test flight of the new hybrid fighters using alien tech.

in real life he did not want to do another sci fi movie so soon after the failure of his movie with his son "after earth".

filming started in 2015, but casting announcements for the movie was done in 2013.

but i'm reading wikipedia and someone posted that will smith was asking ridiculous money to come back, probably knowing they can't afford him so he didn't have to.

I read somewhere that the Suicide Squad filming conflicted with IDR filming and the production team didn't want to wait for Will to wrap up. He wanted to be a part of it but didn't want to stiff SS.

i read an article that supports what you posted as well. i would like to think you are right because it sounds more positive.

i can't find the exact article i read, but this is about as close as it gets:

http://www.slashfilm.com/will-smith-...ay-resurgence/

Quote:
Smith went back and forth for years on Independence Day: Resurgence before ultimately deciding to pass. Last year, Emmerich explained Smith’s choice. “Well, you know, like near the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was very excited to be in it,” he said, “but then after a while, you know, he just was tired of sequels and he did another science-fiction film [After Earth], which was his father-son story, so he opted out.”

It also DID have some very notable practical effects, such as the city-destroying fire storms. The DVD extras have some great stuff about how the effects were done.
