I don't mind dineout as much as I do mind the people that never eat at these resturants to try their full menu/service/experience, but then go try it during dine out, and write a review about it on yelp/facebook and act like they are a foodie and critique things like bad service or the food "wasnt worth it" etc.

50% of what you pay for in a high end restaurant is the ambiance and service, the other 50% is food. I don't look down at those that goes to Dine Out as I was one of them when I lived in Vancouver, but just don't judge a restaurant based on your dine out experience, think of it was a cheap but decent $30/40 meal rather than a fancy dinner experience.

hmm.
Are you still beating the dead horse? You're quoting something stupid I said, I apologized, and now you're digging it further after I explained what I meant? Why are you so butthurt? Let me explain again.

In my initial comment, I called dineout goers cheap because I overgeneralized as Skiiipi described, people who go and write yelp reviews/food reports acting like foodies and pretending to experienced the full menu. This is what I was apologizing for as it was an ignorant comment and is clearly not a representation of all people.

In subsequent comments, I explained why I do not partake in the event and used a loose analogy to compare it.

If you look at the list, the values are few and far between. If you truly want to visit the best and trendiest restaurants in the city, you won't be getting them on a Dine Out deal. I'm thinking Hawksworth, Chambar, Farmer's Apprentice, Fable, etc. That's why some people look down on Dine Out - it's for suckers who think they're getting a good deal when they're not. Times are tough, but if you want a good meal out, then save your money and spend $200-300 every 6 months for a proper experience instead of spending $80 4-5 times during Dine Out. And saving money sometimes has its benefits - it elevates the occasion and may inspire you and your significant other to dress up and bring out your best behaviour.

I don't think I read that right.

hawksworth has been doing dineout events for the past 2-3 years.

chambar, farmers apprentice and fable all were on dineout at least once.

??

The way I see it, if they can't do a decent job for dine out, I'm not going to pay even more later.

hawksworth and chambar were pretty similar in terms of service and ambience when doing dineout and not.

We went to Horizons on Friday. Their Dine Out was $30 for 3 courses. Not only was it good value, but it tasted excellent, and the service was top-notch.

Went to Chambar last night, good service, good food, good ambience! The duck was a bit on the salty side but other than that everything else was good!

I've gone to dineout for the past few years, this year I don't have the money to spend yet in the future I will be back on it.

Personal experience: Dineout swamps restaurants. If said restaurant is not ready to handle the overwhelming amount of people, then service and food quality suffer. Plain and simple.

People tend to do dineout for the food, sometimes the quality suffers if the above is not met. It's a way to get a restaurant exposure, whether good or bad it's still a chance to get more customers through the doors and a possibility of returning customers.

Went to possibly my one and only Dineout this year at Anna Lena, le gf wanted to try it.

For $40 price point it was underwhelming and I personally think their brunch menu is much better in terms of taste and value.

Went to Yew for dinner last night.
Matt served me, his service was 10/10. He knew the menu inside and out and really gave us his suggestion on food and drinks. He steered me away from the lobster tail add-on of $15. He gave me a heads up that its really tiny and not worth it. Got Prawns instead, best choice i made all night.

Appy:CREAMY PEI MUSSEL & CLAM CHOWDER (9/10)
Entree:GOLDEN MISO BRAISED SHORTRIBS(7/10) with Prawns as an Add-on(8/10) - only because they only gave me 3, but I understand they can be expensive.
Dessert: HAZELNUTS & HONEY (wasn't too sweet, loved it.) (9/10)

8.6/10

Definitely gonna come back and try their sable fish!

If your girlfriend wants to drink but doesn't like the taste of alcohol, have her try the Skookum-Chuk ($15). You don't taste the alcohol at all, and its pretty tasty.

There is no profit margin on dineout. I can't even make a 3 course meal at home for $28
Its so restaurants have enough money to cover January's operating costs.
Dineout will always be a poor excuse for what the restaurant has to offer. That said, if you go somewhere great like l'abbatior, or Hawksworth, you are still going to get good food and service, however its not even in the same league as what you would get when dineout isn't on.
It can be a great way to go out and have a good meal for a reasonable price, but to think its anything like a regular experience at that restaurant is not the case.
