Sushi - where to go?

Need one of those small hole in the wall type places.
Has to be reasonably priced .. somewhere between Sushi Garden and Miku...Think Ebisu range.
Need to fit 20 people on a weekend night
Vancouver, Barnaby, Richmond only.

All you with gf's who are self proclaimed foodies ... GO!

Anything decent place is going to be full on a weekend and/or will not take reservations. A restaurant would have to have your tables vacant for an hour before you arrive plus the time you'll be occupying the table.

Most places would rather serve 40 people (small groups) than 20 people (large group) over the two hour window, assuming people finish eating within an hour.

That's how it was when I worked in the industry.

You may have a better chance of finding a place if you have an early dinner (5pm) before the dinner rush or talk to the manager about leaving a deposit to hold your tables for a while.

Pretty much what he said.
Most if not all "hole in the wall" places are at most 50 seat capacity, if even that. If the place is halfway decent they probably wouldn't lock up half the restaurant on a weekend night for 1 group. Unless you want to pay on top of it to book out the restaurant or maybe guarantee a minimum spending per person. It would probably have to be a lot higher than the "average" customer.

Spoiler!

If it really doesn't have to be in the locations you mentioned.. i'd suggest Tengoku in Surrey (Close to Guildford Mall). It seems like the perfect place since they have upstairs for big parties.

Kibo in Yaletown does group bookings on weekends and other busy periods, however there is a minimum charge for the group. Last time I inquired, 40 people on a Saturday from 10pm to close is around $3000.

Kibo is a nice place, however it is far and away not anywhere resembling a "hole-in-the-wall" lol

I think with a large group, you are better off at a All you can eat. I recommend tomokazu then.

Sushiholic and Sushiville had no room for us... damn, I feel like baby Jesus

We've gone with Temaki Sushi on W.Broadway.

Any reviews of that place?

My go to place is Y sushi in Burnaby by highgate. It's tiny place, but they might let you reserve the entire place?

Coquitlam is just past Burnaby and Sushi Oyama makes excellent food. I take all my foreign clients here and they ask to go there if they come back to BC. FYI - They make a beef roll - as odd as that sounds - that is just excellent.

They also have the Burnaby location just East of Metrotown, if OP doesn't want to travel that far.

Kinda OT, but that place used to be a crematorium or funeral home. I'll pass on visiting that location

I have been going to Sushi Mura, busy all the time; hence, I just order in and do take out. I like their Volcano Roll.
