Vancity Buzz

What's with all the Vancity Buzz bashing going on?
As soon as someone link Vancity Buzz as source, people seem to have problem with it

RiceIntegraRS 01-20-2016 06:49 PM

cause Vancouver likes to hate our own. Vancity Buzz, Michael Buble, Canucks, Nickleback.......

dlo 01-20-2016 06:55 PM

uh no lol vancity buzz have some of the shittiest writers ever and half their list of "places to go" or "food to eat" comes from restaurants paying for advertisements.. totally biased writing, no real credible sources for their shit lol

Sadly, I'm sure he's not.

Because this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_advertising

Quote:

Native advertising is a type of advertising, usually online but feasibly elsewhere, that matches the form and function of the platform upon which it appears.
Basically, what dlo said above. Although they post frequently about all things Vancouver, some of which articles are helpful to get a "coles notes" of a situation, but are often poorly written and/or filler to add content to their site and generate ad revenue and traffic.

Far too many click-bait "Top 10/Best/Worst/7 things to eat while riding a unicycle on the Lions Gate bridge this weekend" articles.

EDIT: Example: Shit like this. Get the hell out of my newsfeed. Seriously, who gives a shit.

What really did it in for me with Vancitybuzz was when they mentioned Pho Hoa as one of the best and reliable cheap eats Pho places. I mean I don't want to claim to be this foodie who knows it all but anyone who mentions Pho Hoa for best anything loses any credibility in my books.

Durrann 01-20-2016 08:20 PM

yeah i definitely think its bias writing

tiger_handheld 01-20-2016 08:21 PM

without content vancity buzz would be dead --- it started out as a blog, the genius behind it thought it could be a company. it has no choice but to whore it self out to whoever gives dollar bills...
Should've kept it as a blog and made some ad revenue off google with decent content instead of going full retard.

there is a calgay buzz too.

All they did was copy buzzfeed. I'm sure there's millions of sites like it

Eff-1 01-20-2016 09:17 PM

While we can all agree the quality of the writing isn't always the best, their site brings in impressive traffic and they've clearly established themselves as a legit local business. It's definitely not a blog anymore. I bet they they see close to, if not more than, sites like the Vancouver Sun in terms of page visits. Watch it get bought out eventually by a major media player.

There will always be haters, but like it or not, clearly they are doing something right. Everybody here loves to bash it, but nobody's unfollowing and/or not reading it.

i think quite a few of us avoid clicking on their links...don't give 'em the clicks/ad revenue haha

Ikkaku 01-20-2016 09:23 PM

To be fair, a lot of those 'best food' awards and lists are paid for as well. It is just that VCB regurgitates everything and claims it to be journalism.

underscore 01-20-2016 09:23 PM

In my experience the general population is more easily drawn in by clickbaity garbage than by quality content, so places like Vancity Buzz do well.

I don't really see what's so bad about that story. They're writing about an upcoming event. It's not a paid post. A PR person likely pitched it to them. And don't forget, you control your own newsfeed. Nobody's forcing you to read anything you don't want to. You chose to click on the story. You chose to like them on Facebook. And you can choose to unsubscribe if you want

There needs to be a Pubesbuzz...

To answer the original question:

1.) Must generate a lot of revenue given the spam level articles promoting businesses
a.) Said articles are written like they were copypasted from an email sent by a company rep.

2.) When a news story article is written it is either:
a.) A TL;DR version of a better written article found elsewhere (though most VCB readers prefer TL;DR as they have the attention span of a thimble in a food processor)
b.) Written in a third rate style. Would be insulting to an intern fresh out of journalism school. Seriously where the fuck do they find these writers? I'm guessing they're at most paid either under the table or 'paid with experience' !!

3.) What do the founders do with the income they generate? I'm sure they grow this website like I grow my crusty sock collection but surely they don't do much else? I heard they sublease an office somewhere?

Buzz sites tend to pass off misinformation or emotionally charged articles rather than logic which is why you get the batshits coming out of their caves to post on all their articles.

I know someone from there is probably reading this thread. I await my unblurred photos on their page shortly

VCB has been relegated to the same status as answers.com for me -- the absolute WORST of click bait sites.

i'm sure they'll have a headline like "10 Canuck players who are notoriously kinky. #7 will SHOCK you!"

fuck those sites. infact i'm going to hostblock them now so they don't even appear on my feed.

Not related at all, but does BC Hydro, now Translink still print out the Buzzer?

I remember reading those things waaaaayyyyy back. Now that I don't take transit, I would like to know if it still continues. It started out back in the early 1900's.

Buses back then had the BC Hydro logo's on them............ a little confusing.

Quote:

The BC Electric Railway was incorporated in 1897 to take over the property and business of the Consolidated Railway Company. The Consolidated Railway Company had been formed the previous year, taking over ten other companies engaged in electric light systems or tramways in Vancouver, Victoria and New Westminster. Slowly the streetcars and interurban trams were converted to trolley and gas-powered buses. The province formed the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority in 1962, bringing the transit systems under BC Hydro.[1]

It's called click bait for a reason

7seven 01-21-2016 05:43 AM

My problem with the site is that they pretty much steal 98% of their stories from other local media sites, hours late or even a day late, leaching off others work. It would also appear every single article written on the site has poor grammar, spelling and structure, almost like they "hire" basically any moron off the street with no training. Everything else on their also appears to be ads disguised as "reviews" or "stories".

I haven't followed or read any Vancitybuzz articles in years. Occasionally some of their stuff pops up on Revscene or my feeds as some people I know comment/like/share their stories. If something catches my eye, I Google the topic and find a non Vancitybuzz article, and pretty much all the time, its on another media site, from hours before or even a day before.

^ I do exactly the same as 7seven.

unit 01-21-2016 07:25 AM

vancitybuzz is just another clickbait site, its like our local buzzfeed.
the contributers are crap and can't be considered writers/journalists, it's total amateur hour.
